Under the direction of the Country Director, and working closely with global and regional colleagues, the Myanmar Program Conservation Director is responsible for the development, management and implementation of TNC’s conservation strategies and projects in Myanmar. This includes refining and implementing the existing forests strategy, which is focused on protecting, sustainably managing and restoring Myanmar’s globally significant forests. The Conservation Director will be expected to assess and, in consultation with relevant government departments and partner organizations, advance other strategic priorities for TNC in Myanmar, beyond the forestry sector.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Conservation Director is responsible for ensuring that sound and integrated conservation and development principles are in place and operating well throughout TNC’s conservation work in Myanmar. The Conservation Director is responsible for implementing and achieving TNC’s conservation goals, by maintaining strong partnerships with relevant government agencies, civil society groups, conservation NGOs and the private sector. They work closely and coordinate with a wide variety of TNC staff from across the globe, to ensure the best available science and technical expertise is available to the TNC Myanmar Program. They solicit and monitor government funding, assist with speaking engagements, lead donor field trips, and assist in private fund raising as necessary. The Conservation Director is an expert in conservation tools and approaches and advises TNC staff and partners on the application of these tools and approaches in Myanmar.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Refine and lead implementation of TNC’s conservation strategies in Myanmar.
  • Travel extensively to regional areas within Myanmar, in addition to working closely with partners in Nay Pi Taw, Mandalay and Yangon.
  • Some travel within the Asia Pacific region and to the United States and Europe is likely.
  • Build and supervise a team of project staff to execute TNC’s conservation strategies in Myanmar.                                                                  
  • Help drive fundraising efforts, from public and private donors.
  • Ability to work effectively under pressure and meet deadlines.
  • Resolve complex problems independently with minimal supervision.
Educational Background: 
BA/BS degree in natural resources management, conservation, business, law or another related field of study and at least 5 years’ experience in land conservation, real estate, law, business or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience working with a wide range of people, such as landowners, corporate executives and government officials.
  • Experience negotiating complex agreements.
  • Supervisory experience.
  • Experience in developing and managing multiple projects and timelines.
  • Experience working with computers, including database management

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Extensive experience working in conservation and/or development in Myanmar, including developing or implementing conservation projects.
  • Experience building and maintaining long-term relationships with stakeholders including academic, public, private and communities
  • Experience managing and tracking multiple prospects and donors.
  • Experience working with cross-functional teams.
  • Experience, coursework, or other training in fundraising principles and practices
  • Fluency in English
  • Fluency in Myanmar language is desirable.
  • Graduate level degree (e.g. Master’s or PhD) desirable. 
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience appreciated. 
  • Knowledge of current trends and strategies in conservation.
