An exciting opportunity in Central Washington with the Yakima Humane Society has arisen. We are looking for a seasoned, passionate, innovative Executive Director to lead the continued growth of the organization, as we work tirelessly to ensure the humane treatment of animals in our community. The Executive Director is responsible for the overall operational management of the Yakima Humane Society in supporting its mission, goals, objectives, strategic plans and development, while serving as its spokesperson within the community. A successful track record of strong innovative and inclusive leadership, which will facilitate open communication to harmonize staff, the Board and the other constituents with whom he/she will interface, is sought.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for oversight of YHS, which includes administration of all programs and services of the organization. The Executive Director works with the board on short-and-long-term planning. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director is responsible for the oversight of the YHS, which includes administration of all programs and services.  The Executive Director will develop and oversee a current budget of $1.7M, and an investment portfolio of $100,000; as well as plan for significant growth of both the budget and portfolio in the next three years.  Additionally, the Executive Director is responsible for the strategic processes of the organization, managing and developing a talented paid staff of 30 and more than 115 volunteers. Currently, the direct reports for the Executive Director are the Clinic Director, Director of Operations, and Communication & Marketing Director.

The Executive Director will assist the Board in the execution of the current strategic plan and the development of strategic directions and policy in the fulfillment of the agency’s mission. This individual is responsible for the overall management and operation of the YHS in compliance with Board-adopted policies and with all applicable local, state, and federal regulations and laws. The Executive Director provides a leadership role in initiating and maintaining community relationships and securing the operating and investment funds necessary to sustain current and future operations.

Educational Background: 
Bachelors degree required
Prior animal welfare experience preferred
Skills/Experience: 
  • Experience in a senior leadership role where he/she has either reported directly to or worked closely with a Board of Directors is expected.
  • The ideal candidate will bring strong and successful leadership of an animal welfare/control agency or other nonprofit organization if there is a demonstrated level of both passion for, and involvement with, an animal welfare organization.
  • The person we seek should demonstrate a balance between creative thinking and management acumen as well as the ability to assess and maintain policies and procedures for moving an organization to a new level of excellence.
  • Qualified candidates will have exceptional interpersonal skills and will be able to relate to all constituencies.
  • This individual has demonstrated success in building and sustaining coalitions toward the achievement of goals.
  • The successful candidate will have financial management experience as well as demonstrated accomplishments in fundraising, including securing major and planned gifts from individual donors, foundations and corporations.
  • We seek an exceptional communicator who can demonstrate a successful background in external relations, including experience speaking with the media in a variety of situations.
  • This person will be articulate and passionate about the humane treatment of animals and will welcome and respect the multiple perspectives and groups that demonstrate an active interest in animal welfare.
  • An understanding of business principles applied to a nonprofit enterprise, including a background of good budget management, is necessary.
  • Personnel management skills that include an ability to work collaboratively, listen, provide feedback, build morale, delegate, “roll up one’s sleeves” and make decisions are essential.
  • The candidate should be motivated by the best interests of the organization and will bring high emotional intelligence to effectively transition the organization from a long-term leader.Demonstrated success managing change, planning, forecasting and determining courses of action is needed.
  • An undergraduate degree from a four-year college or university is desired, however demonstrated experience leading an organization will be considered. Evidence of a passionate commitment to the proper care of all animals is strongly recommended. CAWA credential is preferred.
  • Candidates must have demonstrated competency in areas such as fundraising, program and fund development, board relations, and financial management.
  • A bachelor's degree preferred and a minimum of 5 years comparable executive level work experience in leading an organization of similar size (and mission), or providing increasingly responsible leadership in a senior management capacity.
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan, including strong ability to develop relationships with foundations, corporations and individual donors as well as implement creative strategies for sustaining and raising new sources of earned and contributed revenue.
  • Excellent financial management skills, including clear financial responsibility and authority for managing similar-sized (or larger) budgets and ability to ensure accurate financial reporting.
  • Strong ability and desire to serve as staff leader and mentor; excellent supervision and staff/volunteer support skills with proven ability to work with different work styles and to facilitate clear communication and create a corporate culture.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including being able to be a key media and public event spokesperson.
  • Exceptional creativity and strategic skills, problem solving abilities, and proven ability to develop and implement innovative programs and strategies to promote collaboration and achieve mission objectives.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Compensation: Salary range:$75,000-$100,000 - dependent on experience.The Yakima Humane Society offers a negotiable benefits package.
