The Nature Conservancy (TNC) in Delaware, in partnership with First State National Historical Park (FRST), is a member of the Alliance for Watershed Education, (AWE), a coalition of 23 environmental education centers focused on constituency building and stewardship of the Delaware River Watershed. The Delaware River Watershed Fellow will serve as an ambassador for TNC and FRST by engaging our watershed community, inspiring watershed stewardship, helping to reach new and underserved audiences and achieve our goals of diversity equity and inclusion. By the end of the 12 weeks of service, Fellows will have become local watershed ambassadors in their community and will have introduced many new people to their local trails and waterways, as well as the steps they can take to help restore and protect the Delaware River watershed.

Areas of Responsibility: 

The Delaware River Watershed Fellow will work on the Stream Stewards project which is designed to engage volunteers in water quality monitoring and watershed stewardship, in the Beaver Valley Unit of First State National Historical Park.  The Watershed Fellow will report to the Stream Stewards Project Manager, and assist with outreach in the Wilmington community, and making connections between watersheds and urban residents, especially youth.  The Fellow will spend much of their time out in the field either in urban neighborhoods or in natural settings in the park, as well as time in the TNC Wilmington office.

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE 

  • Engage target communities in Wilmington through education, outreach and stewardship.
  • Professionally represent TNC,FRST and AWE at resource fairs and festivals around Wilmington.
  • Assist with leading environmental education and programming in targeted communities.
  • Explore ways to engage new and diverse communities, including underrepresented audiences in the city.
  • Assist with volunteer events and High School summer programs.
  • Participate in a three-day supportive watershed stewardship training at Pocono Environmental Education Center (overnight, June 12-14.) http://www.peec.org/
  • Participate in weekly webinars and check-ins, and attend two in-person regional meetings.
  • Occasional evening and weekend hours
  • Complete a required Capstone project to be presented at the Watershed Fellowship Summit on August 16.
Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED
Skills/Experience: 
  • Age 18 years or older by June 3 start date
  • Experience with writing and oral communications
  • Experience organizing and coordinating multiple projects

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Based in Wilmington, DE
  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experience preferred.
  • Ability to communicate clearly through writing and speaking in English 
  • Ability to work in a team environment and complete tasks independently
Compensation/Benefits: 

SALARY INFORMATION: $12.00/per hour
