Under the direction of the Associate Executive Director, the Aquatic Director will be responsible for leadership in the operations of all indoor and outdoor aquatic areas (two on-site indoor pools, one off-site winter pool & one outdoor pool at the Hanby Outdoor Center) and related programming, including swim lessons (private & group), swim team (pre-competitive & competitive), lap and family swim for members as well as Ellis Lifeguard Trainings for community & staff.  Incumbent supervises two full-time Aquatic Directors who oversee aspects of the Aquatic Department as well as one full-time Aquatics Coordinator & part-time Aquatic Supervisors.  Incumbent is responsible for personnel and fiscal leadership, program & membership development/retention, policy compliance, as well as strategic & operating plan initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Personnel Management

  • Must be able to lead by example the values of caring, honesty, respect and responsibility.
  • Recruit, Train, Supervise, Inspire & Evaluate the entire Aquatic Leadership Staff.
  • Supervises, supports, mentors & coaches two Full-Time Aquatic Directors.
  • Work with Aquatic Leadership to Recruit, Hire, Schedule, Train, Inspire & Discipline all daily employees & volunteers regarding aquatics programs & services.
  • Evaluate and propose staffing structural realignments as needed in the aquatic department.
  • Develop and maintain an effective leadership team with high staff morale and low staff turnover.
  • Foster an environment in which staff members feel valued and receive recognition and positive reinforcement.
  • Work in/with YMCA of Delaware provided & approved Business Systems to ensure all aspects of Brandywine Aquatic Personnel responsibilities are compliant and completed within announced timelines.

Program Development and Management

  • Responsible for administration, development, delivery and promotion of all aquatic programs, which include Water Wise (learn to swim), Swim Lessons (group & private), competitive programs, lap and family swim and Ellis & Associates ILTP Trainings Programs.
  • Ensure all program offerings are available and up to date within YMCA of Delaware Member Systems as well as posted on social media channels, websites, YMCA of Delaware App as well as Member Reminder Channels.
  • Strengthen and/or create partnerships to ensure the Y mission can thrive throughout the community.

Facility & Risk Management

  • Responsible for four pools: two indoor pools, one off-site winter pool and one off-site seasonal outdoor pool at the Hanby Outdoor Center.
  • In conjunction with the YMCA of Delaware Risk Management Department, ensure all aspects of Aquatic Operations are compliant with Ellis & Associates, Y-USA, State of Delaware Bather Code, Model Aquatic Health Code & USA Swimming.
  • Work with Facility Supervisor, Facility Staff & Aquatic Staff to ensure safety and cleanliness in the aquatic facilities. Share pool maintenance, daily chemical readings, temperature, ordering of supplies and cleanliness responsibilities with Facility Department.
  • Utilize Facility Dude on regular basis to request work orders relating to Aquatic & Facility needs
  • Coordinate annually the compliance as well as opening/closing of the Hanby Outdoor Center Pool & Claymont Elementary School Pool.  In conjunction with supervisor, develops timeline, schedule, staffing and equipment needs and works closely with Facilities and Aquatic Staff to ensure smooth operations.
  • Take all precautions and preventative actions necessary to ensure the safety of members, volunteers and staff always.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree in recreation or related field with 2+ years of related experience supervising a large staff and managing pools.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Broad background in YMCA aquatic operations and program development and management. 
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relations; ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • Skills in organizational management, staff and volunteer leadership, human relations and team building. Must be able to use good judgment and problem-solving skills in daily strategic and emergency situations.

Required Certifications

  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-Team Leader certification preferred.
  • Required certifications include Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Certification, completion of only Child Protection Trainings, Sexual Harassment and Blood Borne Pathogen Training.  Must have or able to secure within one-year Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Instructor.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $49,000.00 - $55,100.00
