Under the direction of the Executive Director, the Aquatic Director III will be responsible for leadership of all aquatic operations which includes related programming & staff (swim lessons, swim team, masters program, lap and family swim, Ellis Lifeguard Trainings and community CPR/First Aid offerings).  Incumbent supervises the following aquatic leadership staff: Aquatic Coordinator.  Incumbent is responsible for personnel and fiscal management, program (swim team, Water Safety Week and aquatic fitness), Aquatic PLT and membership development, facility and risk management and member retention.  Incumbent will have the primary responsibility of competitive & instructional oversight while the Aquatic Coordinator supports the daily operations & safety aspects of the department.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Recruits, trains, supervise and evaluate all aquatic leadership staff.
  • Hires, trains, supervises, and supports, mentors & coaches the Aquatic Coordinator who oversees day to day management of Lifeguard Staff & Community based trainings. 
  • Oversee the development, framework and sustainability of a swim team advisory committee that supports the YMCA of Delaware vision for competitive swimming.
  • Evaluates and proposes staffing structural realignments as needed in the aquatic department.
  • Responsible for administration, development, delivery and promotion of all competitive based programs and instructional based programs, which include age group swim team, master’s program as well as group & private swim lessons.
  • Responsible for all communication and marketing strategies that relate to aquatic programs and offerings, which include Team Unify, Remind.com, YMCA of Delaware App, Website, Social Media, etc.
  • Responsible for supportive oversight & promotion to the Aquatic Coordinator of all branch safety courses including CPR / First Aid / AED trainings for employees and community members.
  • Ensures all program offerings are available and up to date within the YMCA of Delaware member database (Protivity).  Programs are properly posted on social media channels, website & YMCA of Delaware app as expected.
  • Responsible for quality, appropriateness, cost effectiveness, growth and evaluation of all aquatic programs.
  • Helps ensure implementation of the Association Strategic Plan.
  • Reviews and evaluates the enrollments, programs, services and operations of the Aquatic Department, communicates these findings and makes appropriate recommendations and changes.
  • Coordinates and participates in YMCA of Delaware Water Wise initiatives as well as future collaborations connected directly to the responsibility of the Branch.
  • Provides support for collaborations that have been established with the local school district and community partners
  • Responsible for one indoor pool
  • Ensures that the pool is Ellis & Associates compliant in accordance with current Ellis & Associates Comprehensive Aquatic Risk Management Program Handbook.
  • Works with Facility Supervisor, aquatic staff and the Association Director of Aquatic Safety & Compliance to ensure safety and cleanliness in the aquatic facilities. Share pool maintenance, daily chemical readings, temperature, ordering of supplies and cleanliness responsibilities with Facility Department.
  • Utilizes Facility Dude on regular basis to request work orders relating to Aquatic & Facility needs
  • Annually coordinate the indoor pool shutdown.  In conjunction with supervisor, develops timeline, schedule, staffing and equipment needs and works closely with Facilities and Aquatic Staff to ensure smooth openings.
  • Takes all precautions and preventative actions necessary to ensure the safety of members and staff at all times.
  • Follows up on all incident reports relating to all aquatic programs and incidents involving aquatic staff.
  • In conjunction with Facilities Department, support branch risk management initiative. Maintain and ensure updates/compliance for all Branch Emergency Documents. Work with the Aquatic Coordinator to schedule and evaluate mock drills for fire, power outage and missing or abducted child. Coordinate ordering of branch first aid supplies for all departments; oversee weekly AED compliance checks.
Educational Background: 
A bachelor’s degree in physical education, recreation or related field with 2+ years of related experience supervising a staff and pools.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Broad background in YMCA aquatic operations and program development and management. 
  • Required certifications include Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Certification, completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Sexual Harassment and Blood Borne Pathogen Training.
  • Proven track record of developing authentic and deepened relations; ability to establish and maintain collaborations with community organizations.
  • Must have or secure within one year Ellis & Associates ILTP Lifeguard Instructor.
  • Skills in organizational management, staff and volunteer leadership, human relations and team building. Must be able to use good judgment and problem solving skills in daily strategic and emergency situations.

Required Certifications

  • YMCA Team Leader or Multi-team/Branch Leader certification preferred.
Compensation/Benefits: 

$43,600.00 - $49,100.00
