We are looking for an experienced professional to oversee and manage the general financial affairs of the Association with an approximate $11 million budget, reporting to the Chief Executive Officer.  Provide direction and leadership for YMCA finance and business operations. Oversee the YMCA’s financial matters and investments including accounting practices, the maintenance of its fiscal records, and the preparation of its financial reports. Ensures a system of cash handling procedures, strong internal controls and maintains fiscal and risk management soundness.  Manage the annual external audit, the 990 tax return, the preparation of information for outside funders, and all investment accounts.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Monitors monthly financial operations including operating cash flow, prepares analysis and reports, and gives guidance to executive and operating staff.  Works with staff on issues that affect financial outcome.  Prepares specific recommendations. 
  • Manages the accounting staff and oversees the operations of the accounting/finance and payroll departments including the adequacy, and the effectiveness of the accounting and payroll systems and internal controls.    
  • Oversees entire payroll process and works closely with Human Resources.
  • Oversees time and attendance/payroll system, gas/electric/phone contracts, property/liability insurance and business licensures to retain tax exempt status. 
  • Provides guidance to Directors/Coordinators on business office functions including cash handling and accounts receivable. 
  • Works directly with assigned committee(s) (Finance, Investment and Audit) of the board as the liaison to build volunteer relationships, develop policies, monitor the implementation and meet the related needs of the board. 
  • Manages the annual independent audit, the preparation of financial statements and the IRS 990 tax form.  Prepares or oversees the preparation of required audit schedules; maintains records.
  • Meets periodically with the outside auditors to maintain communications and keep them informed of changes in the YMCA. Ensures that current accounting standards and legal requirements are met.
  • Oversees and provides leadership with Senior Vice President/COO’s assistance to the annual budget process including: issuing guidelines, targets and procedures; training staff, auditing budgets, overseeing data input and preparing reports.
  • Oversees preparation of reports to United Way, YMCA of the USA, external grant funders and governmental agencies.
  • Acts as coach to our Risk Management cabinet to assess overall risk and liabilities association-wide.
  • Prepares or supervises the preparation of outside reports and filings.
  • Oversees the month-end and year-end closings and the preparation of statements and reports.
  • Represents the YMCA with key community organizations and events as required.
  • Develops appropriate reports regarding the Y’s investments and ensures that investments policies are being followed.  Serves as liaison to the investment managers.
  • Assists the CEO and Senior VP of Operations-COO in assessing organizational risks and ensuring that adequate and appropriate insurance coverage is in effect.
  • Responsible for supervision and leadership of assigned staff including but not limited to employee recruitment, staff development, budgeting, training, performance appraisals, and employee relations of Finance staff.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in accounting or finance and Certified Public Accountant required; Master’s degree in accounting or finance with CFO and non-profit experience preferred. 
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5 - 10 years of experience in accounting and financial management.
  • Knowledge and understanding of general business matters required including budget development, financial reporting, cash management, business taxes, banking and debt financing instruments.
  • Knowledge of computer systems, including experience with system selection, new system implementation and project management. Personal computer skills required.
  • Must have exceptional planning and organizational skills (time-management and attention to detail)
  • Experience in effectively managing a staff team
  • Ability to work successfully with volunteers
  • Previous experience with voluntary/nonprofit organizations preferred
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $98,500.00 - $123,000.00
