The Director of Public Policy directs and manages state public policy/advocacy efforts in Iowa as well as the Ambassador Program for the Congressional Advocacy. The Director will promote the mission of the organization by building and mobilizing grassroots advocacy, interacting with policy makers, committees and coalitions and communicating the Association's issues and policy priorities. This position serves as the principal advisor for public policy planning and all advocacy implementation efforts in Iowa.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Provides staff leadership for the development of public policy goals at the state level in collaboration with the state public policy committee and the national public policy office.
- Oversees all efforts and activities to achieve the state-level public policy priorities, including working with the state legislature and state agencies, including the public health department, as appropriate.
- Recruits and trains advocates and manages advocacy database/communications.
- Manages statewide advocacy visits/correspondence/electronic correspondence.
- Monitors committee meetings and legislative action during the state legislative session as well as in between sessions.
- Plans and implements Alzheimer's Advocacy Day at the state capitol.
- Recruits and trains-and subsequently facilitates the efforts of Alzheimer's Association Ambassadors for members of Congress.
- Plans and implements "Coffee with the Congressman" across the state.
- Receives and processes advocacy cards.
- Provides a periodic update of state and federal legislative matters pertaining to Alzheimer's to all Association staff in the state, chapter boards, Ambassadors and other advocates.
- Assists and collaborates with the Director of Communications to coordinate media outreach that promotes the Association's state and federal policy agenda.
- Coordinates implementation of state public policy goals such as development of the state platform and strategy.
- Develops alliances with similar organizations in order to advance issues of importance to the Association at the state level.
- Serve actively in select number of community coalitions and joint advocacy efforts as assigned, providing leadership based on both chapter and national public policy initiatives and ensuring that our health care system reflects awareness of and ability to serve individuals with Alzheimer's disease.
- Represents the chapter at public forums, conferences, state task forces, government agencies, etc. on public policy issues as needed.
- Recruits and coordinates volunteer advocates from the state to attend the Public Policy Forum in Washington, D.C.
- Provides staff and volunteers at all Walks ((and other events) to recruit advocates.
- Assists and collaborates with the chapter's Development, Finance and Operations, Marketing and Program Services departments to jointly achieve organization-wide goals and support the success of each department.
- With the management team, promote strategic thinking among all staff and encourage cross-departmental collaboration and support to achieve strategic goals.
- Monitor Chapter advocacy compliance with National standards.
- Continuously monitor relevant Federal and State legislative issues.
- All other duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience:
- At least 3 years of state-level government affairs experience and/or grassroots advocacy
- Experience working with volunteers preferred
- Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
- Proven self-starter with excellent judgment and careful attention to detail
- Strong negotiation skills
- Ability/willingness for frequent travel across chapter territory
- Willingness to work evenings and weekends if necessary
- Ability to operate a motor vehicle. Must be in possession of a valid driver's license and insurance
- Ability to sit for long periods of time and move about to retrieve files
- Persons from diverse backgrounds are strongly encouraged to apply
- Ability to occasionally lift 25 lbs., bend and stoop
