The Camp Counselor is responsible for assisting senior camp staff in implementing programs and experiences for fourth and fifth grade campers at the Little Creek Nature Area in Florissant, Missouri. The Camp Counselor will enthusiastically help campers develop their outdoor skills such as archery, campfire cooking, kayaking, nature hikes and more. Working in small group settings, the Camp Counselor will serve as a positive role model, have a genuine interest in the campers, foster the campers’ curiosity of nature and the outdoors, and create fond and lasting memories of a real summer camp experience.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assist in managing small groups of campers during programs and activities.
  • Organize and lead a variety of small and large group activities.
  • Assist in managing the Friday field trip.
  • Attend scheduled training.
  • Work approximately 30 hours a week starting July 9th to August 3rd.
  • Be punctual and organized.
  • Follow camp rules and help campers follow camp rules.
  • Serve as a positive role model for all campers.
  • Show a genuine interest in campers and help encourage each camper’s success while at camp.
  • Maintain a positive, focused, and enthusiastic attitude.
  • Ensure that campers are safe and feel included.
  • Encourage respect for the camp, supplies and equipment.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Must currently be enrolled in high school or a recent graduate.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Have the ability to create a safe, warm and welcoming atmosphere to awaken children's curiosity for and enjoyment of nature.
  • Ability to interact well with children, teens and adults, especially parents.
  • Experience working with children.
  • Must be reliable, self-motivated, creative and a team player.
  • Ability to lead and participate in camp activities which include, but are not limited to, hiking, canoeing, team building initiatives, building campfires, and other activities.
  • Willing to work outdoors for extended periods of time, in varying terrain and weather conditions with or without accommodation.
  • Ability to stay positive and encouraging to campers who may be apprehensive or nervous about a particular activity.
