AmeriCorps Education and Outreach Coordinator

This AmeriCorps position serves with The Nature Conservancy over a 6-month period to advance our work in improving private and public lands by providing outreach and education strategies by coordinating volunteers to help provide outreach to local communities and provide environmental education experiences. 

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assists in developing educational program content and/or curricula;
  • May produce publications, materials to promote and increase public awareness (not fundraising);
  • Establishes and develops collaborative relationships with local schools, universities, state/local agencies and corporations that are involved in environmental education to promote, expand and implement The Nature Conservancy's educational initiatives;
  • Recruit, train and manage community volunteers to assist in development of community outreach programs for youth environmental programs;
  • Manage the coordination and logistics of planning, execution and impact of various environmental outreach programs;
  • Collaborate with teachers, chaperones and large groups of children in natural settings;
  • Perform administrative functions as required and within the scope of the grant.

MARGINAL FUNCTIONS

  • Residence in the field house is provided for easy accessibility to the project area and to perform caretaking duties on the property.
  • Scheduling and coordinating logistics for special events and/or meetings;
  • May process forms, prepare reports, monitor budgets, manage webpages etc.… regarding the stewardship program;
  • Coordinate project with several variables, setting realistic deadlines and managing a timeline;
  • Purchase equipment and supplies as provided for in budget; may assist with budget preparation and monitoring;
  • Make day-to-day decisions within the scope of service assignments;
  • Serves independently without requiring detailed management review of general service
  • May serve in variable weather conditions, at remote locations, on difficult and hazardous terrain and under physically demanding circumstances

RESPONSIBILITIES AND SCOPE

  • Coordinate projects and set priorities
  • Adapt or modify processes in response to changing circumstances
  • Interpret guidelines & analyze information
  • Duties are performed under direct supervision and established guidelines, with opportunity to act independently on some tasks
  • Identify routine problems and utilize existing resources for resolution, referring difficult questions and problems to supervisor
  • Demonstrate common sense, flexibility and teamwork with ability to exercise independent judgment
  • Write, edit & proofread written materials for use with project development and presentation
  • Coordinate with vendors/other parties to execute projects/deliverables
  • Willingness and ability to travel within the geography assigned
  • Demonstrate sensitivity in handling confidential information
  • Recruit, train and manage community volunteers

Financial responsibility may include purchasing, processing invoices, contracting with vendors, and assisting with budget tracking.

Educational Background: 
High school diploma or GED, some college and conservation experience desirable
Skills/Experience: 
  • U.S. Citizen, U.S. National or Lawful Permanent Resident
  • Must be at least 18 years of age
  • Satisfy the National Service Criminal History check eligibility criteria
  • Good written and verbal communication skills
  • Experience with MS Office
  • Ability to follow instructions from colleagues
  • Commitment to complete 6 months as AmeriCorps member
  • Good organizational skills and ability to manage diverse activities to meet deadlines

DESIRED QUALIFICATIONS

  • Multi-lingual skills and multi-cultural or cross-cultural experiences are appreciated
  • Bachelor’s Degree preferred
  • Experience working with children and/or teachers
  • Interest in the mission and activities of The Nature Conservancy
  • Database skills, including managing and tracking data, and producing reports;
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail
  • Experience in public speaking experience and/or education
  • Experience in business writing and/or editing publications or related materials
  • Experience coordinating multiple projects
