Consistent with the Christian mission and code of conduct of the Waynesboro Family YMCA, and in cooperation with other YMCA staff, under the direction of the Director of Competitive Swimming & Aquatics (CS&A), the Aquatics Director for day-to-day operations of all aquatics programming, must balance fiscal responsibility, staff development, motivation, quality program delivery and program area upkeep, cleanliness, and safety to experience success.  Works independently under general direction and is expected to determine how to accomplish tasks.

This position requires an individual with extensive knowledge in the aquatics field and a proven leader with the ability to develop relationships and encourage relationship development. A positive teachable spirit with a passion for people, service, relationship building and team building is required. Demonstrated interpersonal skills such as the ability to listen, interview, communicate and coach effectively is also required. S/he must be able to inspire others; s/he must be innovative, creative and visionary. This position requires an individual with passion for helping persons of all types improve and achieve success.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Promotes and incorporates the YMCA 3 focus areas and character development model in all program activities.
  • Recruits, trains, and develops non-exempt and part-time program staff and volunteers.
  • Marketing and distribution of program information.
  • Organizes and schedules programming and registrations.
  • Reviews and processes program scholarship applications.
  • Compiles program statistics.
  • Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of and participation in programs.
  • Develops and maintains appropriate collaborative relationships with other community organizations.
  • Develops and monitors program and departmental budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Coordinates use of applicable facilities for program activities and events.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands programming within the community in accordance with strategic plans.
  • Assists in fund-raising activities and special events.
  • Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in timely manner.
  • Maintains accurate records of staff certifications.
  • Maintains aquatics equipment and facilities.
  • Purchases equipment, parts and supplies as required and approved.
  • Coordinates and schedules equipment maintenance and repairs.
  • Monitors daily operations, adheres to and enforces all YMCA health and safety standards and policies.

Function by Program Area

  • Monitors daily pool operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Maintains accurate records of pool chemical levels and facility maintenance.
  • Conducts and ensures proper maintenance of pools.
  • Secures and schedules pool facilities.
  • Conducts training for lifeguards, swim instructors, First Aid and CPR.
  • Creates and schedules swim classes, water fitness classes, lap swim, family swim and other aquatic programming.
  • Performs lifeguard and swim instructor duties as required.
  • Develops and maintains aquatics manual.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree from an accredited four-year college or university in a related field.  Two years related experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Language Skills:  Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, and governmental regulations.  Ability to write reports, business correspondence, and procedure manuals.  Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from groups of managers, clients, customers, and the general public. 
  • Mathematical Skills:  Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area circumference and volume.  Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra and geometry.
  • Reasoning Ability:  Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete variables in situations where only limited standardization may exist.  Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.

Certificates, Licenses and Trainings Required: 

  • Child Abuse Awareness and Reporting Training (Y will provide) 
  • Lifeguard and Lifeguard Trainer Certified*
  • CPR, First Aid and AED Trainer Certified*
  • Water Safety Instructor Training*
  • Certified Pool Operator (Y can provide if needed)
  • OSHA Training Certified
  • Bloodborne Pathogen Trained

*Must be American Red Cross/YMCA accredited certifications.

Compensation/Benefits: 

$35,000.00 - $40,000.00
