This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility.  In accordance with Association policies, the Camp and Y Base Director will be responsible for the development, organization and implementation of high quality for 3 summer day camps, 5 before and after school enrichment sites (Y Base), and schools out fun day at the West Suburban Y.  The Camp and Y Base Director will oversee the development and implementation of innovative curriculum and activities, supervise, develop, coach and train staff to ensure that participant’s development occurs in a fun, healthy and safe environment, and ensure program outcomes are consistently achieved. Typical work week may include early morning, late afternoon, weeknights and occasional weekend events.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Directly supervises full time Camp and Y Base Site Supervisors, part time camp/before and after school staff in accordance with the Association policies, mission and applicable laws.  Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring and training employees, planning, assigning and directing work, appraising performance; addressing and resolving issues.

  • Directs and supervises program activities to meet the needs of the community and fulfill YMCA objectives. 
  • Recruits, hires, trains, develops, schedules and directs staff and volunteers as needed.  Reviews and evaluates staff performance.  Develops strategies to motivate staff and achieve goals.
  • Directs and supervises 3 summer day camps, 5 school age sites.
  • Establishes new program activities and expands program within the community in accordance with strategic and operating plans.
  • Assists in marketing and distribution of program information, organizes and schedules program registrations.
  • Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with local elementary schools and community organizations.
  • Develops and monitors multiple department budgets to meet fiscal objectives.
  • Creates and schedules all camp, Y Base, and schools out fun day sessions, lesson plans and activities.
  • Compiles program statistics. Monitors and evaluates the effectiveness of participation in programs. Assists Registrar to ensure payment for all enrolled participants.
  • Monitors daily program operations to adhere to all state, local and YMCA health and safety regulations.
  • Secures and monitors transportation for field trips.
  • Purchases and maintains supplies for all program activities.
  • Maintain accurate staff and child records at all times.
  • Assists in YMCA fundraising activities and special events including Annual Campaign and United Way Campaign.
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions.  Responds to all member and community inquiries and complaints in a timely manner.
  • Participate in branch, Association and program cabinet meetings as assigned.
  • Responsible for strict adherence to all Association policies and procedures. Conducts annual review of those policies and procedures.
  • Be a champion for overall branch membership goals, retention and satisfaction.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in education, social work, psychology, or related field.
Skills/Experience: 
  • A level 12 or higher required on The Registry to comply with licensing requirements.
  • One to two years related experience working with school-aged children preferred.
  • Two to three years supervisory experience preferred.
  • Ability to direct programs through supervision of staff, development and monitoring of budgets, marketing and public relations, program development and fundraising.
  • Ability to establish and maintain positive relationships with others.
  • Ability to relate effectively with diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
  • Strong written and oral communication skills required.
  • BLS and First Aid Certification required. (Need within 90 days of hire)
  • Exhibit the core values of caring, respect, honesty, and responsibility in all aspects of their work with the YMCA.
  • Must have a current driver's license and reliable transportation.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Salary: $35,000.00 - $40,000.00
