This position supports the work of the Y, a leading nonprofit, charitable organization committed to strengthening community through youth development, healthy living and social responsibility. The Child Development Assistant Director at the Greater Waterbury YMCA supports the operations of School Readiness and School-aged Child Care program programs at the Rose Hill Annex, including licensing, staffing, program implementation, curriculum planning, parent communication, safety, registration, and accreditation. Works closely with and supports the Child Development Director, Education Coordinator and Family Engagement Specialist in all aspects of these program areas at both the main YMCA building and Rose Hill annex sites.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Performs Administrative tasks for the Child Development Center to support Director and Staff (reports, input, and ensure that confidentiality is maintained at all times).
  • Assist the Director in program-wide administration duties that include licensing, accreditation, recruitment and training process
  • Models relationship-building skills in all interactions. Develops and maintains collaborative relationships with community organizations. Maintains regular, clear, and concise communication within area of responsibility. Includes monthly newsletters for programs.
  • Supervise School Readiness staff at the Rose Hill Annex
  • Assume responsibilities of the Child Development Director in absence of Director
  • Maintains employee’s and children’s files, in accordance with legal requirements as noted by the OEC and Director while never compromising their confidential nature.
  • Possess knowledge and understanding of CT Office of Early Childhood (OEC) regulations, National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards and accreditation, CT Early Learning and Development Standards (CT ELDS) and Documentation and Observation for Teaching System
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in compliance of state regulations, School Readiness requirements, NAEYC accreditation standards and YMCA policies. Ensure all licensing requirements, regulations and policies are in compliance. Including proper staff ratios and reporting requirements.
  • Remain in compliance with all grant funders including, but not limited to, School Readiness, City of Waterbury, and the United Way. Assist in Annual Support Campaign.
  • Work with Education Coordinator to organize and facilitate Center meetings, conferences, field trips, Staff professional development and other special events, as required.
  • Effectively and accurately develop staff schedules on a weekly basis to ensure adequate coverage while maintaining continuity of care. Provides classroom support, as needed.
  • Maintain and order supplies for childcare and submitting appropriate paperwork.
  • Compile various reports and records from Daxko and distribute accordingly.
  • Knowledge in Excel and Word to develop spreadsheets, reports, and flyers.
  • Maintain a positive rapport with parents.
  • Develop positive relations with childcare staff by offering support and assistance in classroom as needed.
  • Display positive interactions with children.
  • Schedule/Conduct monthly fire drills at the Rose Hill Annex
  • Attend staff meetings and trainings as assigned.
  • Maintain the health and safety of children at all times.
  • May need to work over scheduled hours, to attend mandatory staff meetings, attend parent meetings, family activities and functions held outside of program hours of operation.
  • All other duties assigned by supervisors.
Educational Background: 
Baccalaureate or higher degree in any field AND 9 college-level credits in business or program administration 
​OR A Baccalaureate or higher degree in any field AND a state issues principle credential
OR a state issues education administrator or director credential that has been reviewed and approved by NAEYC.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Baccalaureate or higher degree in early childhood education (ECE) or a related major (child development, elementary education, early childhood special education) OR Baccalaureate or higher degree in any field with 36 ECE related credits OR Baccalaureate or higher in any field with state certification to practice as a teacher in a public school and the certification is reflective of the age of the children served.
  • YMCA Team Leader certification preferred.
  • One to two years of related experience preferred.
  • Minimum age of 21.
  • Within 30 days of hire, completion of Child Abuse Prevention, Working with Program Volunteers, CPR, First Aid, AED, medication administration, epi pen and Bloodborne Pathogens training.
  • Knowledge of National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) standards, Early Learning and development standards, and Preschool Assessment Framework.
  • Ability to relate effectively to diverse groups of people from all social and economic segments of the community.
