Works closely with the AARP Foundation President and team to craft compelling content, with a keen understanding of the AARP Foundation’s President voice, tone, and style.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Drafts written content that may include op-eds, blogs, organization- and enterprise-wide communications, letters, articles, and social media, among others.
  • Drafts speeches and remarks for conferences, meetings, and other internal and external AARP Foundation President speaking engagements.
  • Ensures all content is consistent in voice, while messaging is customized and aligned for intended audience.
  • Collaborates across departments (such as programs, development, finance, innovation, strategy, grants, and litigation) to ensure content contains most timely and relevant information.
  • Coordinates efforts across the AARP enterprise to ensure content is consistent with AARP policies and positions.
  • Coordinates with the Communications team and AARP Media Relations to ensure President’s content is leveraged across multiple platforms and in preparation for media engagements.
  • Gathers information from multiple areas and stays abreast of trends across multiple disciplines, including poverty, social isolation, and other social determinants of health, as well as trends in policy, philanthropy, social impact, innovation, grant making, and healthcare, among others.
  • Prepares briefing materials for the President in advance of speaking engagements.
  • Attends speaking events, when needed, and provides on-site support for the President.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree (advanced degree preferred) and a minimum of 8 years of corporate, government, non-profit, or agency communications experience, including at least 3 years in C-Suite speechwriting.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Requires a high degree of autonomy, while collaborating closely with multiple departments and teams to ensure content is relevant and timely.  Strong interpersonal skills are a must.  Must have the ability to work on multiple assignments simultaneously.  Confidentiality is paramount due to the wide-ranging scope of work within the President’s Office.  
  • Excellent written and verbal communications skills, with the ability to communicate with the proper level of detail for the appropriate audiences.
  • Demonstrated track record of creative storytelling, strategic thinking, quality writing, and excellent research and fact-checking.

Demonstrated experience in:

  • Developing successful executive communication and translating industry-speak and scientific information into clear and engaging communications across multiple channels for multiple audiences.
  • Writing voice-of-executive content to match appropriate communication channel and audience.
  • Thriving in an extremely fast-paced and changing environment.
  • Identifying trends and providing landscape briefings.
  • Understanding the digital and social media landscape.
  • Handling assignments with rapid turnaround and meeting deadlines while maintaining excellence in quality.
  • Preparing briefing materials for executives for a variety of internal and external speaking engagements.
  • Ability to synthesize complex issues and policies in ways to engage audience to understand and, when appropriate, take action.
  • Works calmly and maintains good judgment.

  • Ability to maintain a high degree of confidentiality.
