The Video Archive Researcher plays a key role in National Geographic Society’s educational video effort. He or she must be an organized and independent thinker with strong attention to detail and ability to prioritize tasks. While it is necessary to have a general understanding and willingness to participate in the technical and creative side of projects, the primary responsibility of the Video Archive Researcher is to conduct footage research and acquire legal documentation of all assets. She or he must become familiar with all National Geographic footage sources and the research procedures for each one. The Video Archive Researcher will also maintain organized tracking systems on a shared database for footage research and work closely with the Supervising Producer and external producers to determine specific footage needs. The Associate Producer handles additional duties as assigned by the Supervising Producer and Impact Video Director. The Archive Researcher reports to the Supervising Producer, Education.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Footage Research: The Archive Researcher researches stock footage for NGS educational videos, working closely with the external production companies and freelance producers to determine needs. The Archive Researcher must search multiple footage databases and proactively seek out new sources of stock footage. (40%)
  • Footage Tracking: The Archive Researcher develops and maintains a footage database for the Impact Video Team. The Archive Researcher will work very closely with the Associate Producer, Education to track all video resources (20%)
  • Rights Documentation and Reporting: The Archive Researcher is responsible for determining the rights for each piece of footage, and conveying that information to the Producers and Associate Producers. The Archive Researcher reviews, evaluates and corrects any and all inaccuracies found in material releases, music synch licenses, and personal and location releases prior to documenting information in the shared database system. (20%)
  • Archiving: The Archive Researcher assists with ingesting new Impact Video assets, along with their legal deliverables, into the appropriate National Geographic archives. (20%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 2+ years experience in archive research and/or video production
  • The successful candidate will possess an understanding and familiarity with educational, factual, and documentary-style programming.
  • Experience researching footage and organizing materials is essential.
  • Must have the ability to prioritize workflows, work independently and prioritize a variety of competing tasks.
  • Must have strong attention to detail, and excellent written, verbal, communication and interpersonal skills. Experience and familiarity with operation of media production is preferred.
