The VP of Communications and Marketing, leads the development of comprehensive Communications and Marketing Strategies for National Geographic Society’s overall mission and purpose as well as the following key areas: Science and Exploration (SciEx), Education, corporate communications and marketing (including of the museum). This role reports to the Chief Content, Communications and Public Affairs Officer and sits on the divisions senior team.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Strategy, Vision and Leadership (40%)

  • Develop, with a team, and oversee the implementation of an integrated and proactive communications plan (including digital/social) for the three major programs: Science and Exploration (SciEx), Education, and Storytelling groups.
  •  Develop, with a team and oversee the implementation of marketing plans for the organization and the Museum that helps to deliver against their P&L.
  • Oversee assigned communications and marketing staff in the implementation of all assigned strategies and tactics. This includes positioning, messaging, communications, media relations, marketing, digital, social, outreach, partnerships, newsletters, tool kits, measurement; across all relevant constituent groups.
  • Ensure the creation and implementation of a consistent messaging platforms, including the development of messaging tool kits for Explorers and grantees to ensure all National Geographic Society ambassadors are well equipped to deliver our message.
  • Oversee the corporate communications, which includes: creating a plan for brand identity in the marketplace; leading a proactive employee engagement strategy for internal communications that connects staff with National Geographic Society’s leadership, mission and programmatic impact across our three lenses and areas of work; and, identifying challenges and emerging issues faced by the organization, including oversight and management of the organization’s crisis communications needs. Work with leadership team and staff to recognize internal and external communications opportunities and solutions, and define and execute appropriate strategies to support them.
  • Ensure deep alignment with NGP.

Operations (30%)

  • Serve and/or designate a spokesperson and lead point person on media interactions that help promote and/or impact the organization.
  • Exercise judgment to prioritize opportunities for assigned client groups.
  • Actively engage, cultivate, and manage relationships to ensure press coverage and influencer opportunities for assigned client groups.
  • Provide analytics of social media reach and engagement for assigned client group as appropriate and on a regular basis.
  • Oversee the day-to-day activities of the assigned client groups including budgeting, planning and staff development.

Team Development/Management (30%)

  • Recruit and manage a team to support the development and execution of the strategy per client group.
  • Establish and monitor staff performance and development goals, assign accountabilities, set objectives, establish priorities, conduct annual performance appraisals, and administer salary adjustments.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor degree’s required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 15+ years Communications, Marketing and/or PR experience; marketing/PR agency or in-house corporate marcomm experience required. 7+ years of management experience preferred. 
  • Experience leading communications/marketing/engagement strategy for a multi-faceted organization with complex scientific and/or conservation and related education issues a plus.
  • Experience guiding social media and internal communications function for major non-profit, government or corporate.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; ability to work with a variety of constituents ranging from scientists and explorers to government officials and corporate partners. Excellent news judgment, media relations skills, crisis communications skills and a basic understanding of issues related to science and exploration a plus.
  • Ability to handle sensitive information confidentially.
  • Ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Ability to work some late nights and weekends and periodic national and international travel.
