350.org is looking for a motivated and experienced organizer who is excited about building a movement powered by volunteers that is ready to take on the fossil fuel industry.

This position is available at one of our US offices in Washington DC, Brooklyn or Oakland, CA or remotely in any of the following states CA, GA, MD, MA, ME, CO, MT, NY, NC, PA, SC, UT, VT, VA, WA, WI, or Washington, DC.

350.org is hiring a Lead Organizer who can help us manage a team of 2-4 regional field organizers that will recruit, train and support volunteer leaders in different regions of the country. This role will help lead our national field team working to build a powerful, grassroots climate justice movement that can stop fossil fuel expansion and win equitable climate solutions. This person will lead both online and offline organizing strategies to help us grow the size, capacity, diversity and transformative potential of our grassroots base including both strengthening 350’s network of 150+ local affiliates and engaging new constituencies and activists networks.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Actively participate in field team leadership meetings to assess how the field team can best achieve our movement-building goals
  • Daily interaction with Regional Field Organizers to coach them on how best to achieve the campaign goals and build long-term grassroots power
  • Draft host toolkits for key days of action
  • Several calls with internal teams on specific projects (e.g. an upcoming action), an internal campaign call, or a check in with your manager, an new organizing experiment
  • Helping develop organizing plans for our network and activists
  • Helping to shape national organizing strategy as apart of the field leadership team

We are looking for someone who is comfortable working both independently and in teams, highly responsive, and able to lead initiatives as well as take direction from others.

Skills/Experience: 
  • Proven track record of organizing effective teams and leading effective trainings and organizing meetings.
  • Ability to agitate, coach, and hold field staff accountable to ambitious goals.
  • 5+ years of experience in nuts and bolts of organizing including: recruiting, organizing, training, and supporting volunteer leaders.
  • Experience organizing with an orientation to movement building and broader social justice approach, including working in diverse coalitions, especially in communities of color, low-income communities, and communities impacted by climate change.
  • Campaign strategy, planning, staff and volunteer management experience.
  • Proven ability to work effectively with people from diverse racial, ethnic, class, age, gender, and sexual orientation backgrounds.
  • Ability to adapt to and juggle evolving and competing priorities, and meet deadlines.
  • Comfortable working independently as part of a remote team and communicating over phone, Slack, and messaging programs.
  • 3+ years experience working on grassroots campaigns to influence decision makers.
  • Experience creating externally facing, written and/or visual content for organizing campaigns
  • Familiarity or excitement to learn digital organizing skills using new strategies and platforms.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Excellent time management & organizational skills and ability to keep track of multiple projects and relationships.
  • Ability to travel, sometimes as short notice. Although 350 primarily works virtually the job will at times require field deployments.

Desired (but not required) skills and experiences

  • Experience working on electoral campaigns.
  • Experience in different distributed organizing and mobilization models.
  • Experience organizing creative demonstrations, mass participatory actions, civil disobedience and nonviolent direct action.
  • Experience starting and running a grassroots organization
  • Fluency in additional languages beyond English (particularly Spanish)
  • Familiarity with digital organizing skills, social media and distributed platforms.
Compensation/Benefits: 

Compensation: $65,000 - $70,000 depending on location and qualifications
