To enhance and strengthen this work, the Alzheimer’s Association seeks a Senior Specialist, Advocacy within the Public Policy Division’s Department of Advocacy. This person’s primary responsibilities will be to assist in building and maintaining the Association’s grassroots capabilities, and to assist in developing grassroots campaigns that will enhance the Association’s federal and state lobbying efforts.  

This position is based at the Association’s Public Policy office in Washington, D.C. and reports to the Vice President of Advocacy.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Assists in the design and implementation of training programs to assist both the Association chapter staff and grassroots leaders in volunteer management.  
  • Organizes and provides support on advocacy campaigns to recruit, educate and mobilize grassroots advocates.  
  • Communicates advocacy initiatives to both internal and external audiences working in coordination with the Association’s Communications and Development staff.  
  • Provides advocacy best practice guidance to the Association’s nationwide network of policy staff, as well as key stakeholder partners.  
  • Assists Association field staff in planning and implementing annual state advocacy days, including advocate training and mobilization.  
  • Works across Association divisions to integrate grassroots advocacy opportunities.  
  • Provides planning and support of the Association’s annual Advocacy Forum in Washington, D.C.  
  • Assists with the field and political activities of the Association’s 501(c)4 organization and advocacy affiliate, the Alzheimer’s Impact Movement.    
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in political science, public policy, health policy or aging 
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3-5 years’ progressive, professional experience in advocacy/community organizing/mobilization, and grassroots campaigns  
  • Experience in volunteer recruitment, management, and coalition building, particularly in issue advocacy, or grassroots campaign-related work  
  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to work effectively with volunteers, staff, and the public as part of a team  
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills to communicate clearly and accurately, with staff, volunteers, public officials, and outside organizations, in person, in writing, and over the telephone  
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office and Google suite, including spreadsheets. Familiarity with a CRM software and databases a plus  
  • Adept at simultaneously managing multiple, complex projects in varying stages of development under time constraints  
  • Strong work ethic, high integrity, and ability to demonstrate an understanding of the value of advocate volunteers  
  • Ability and willingness to work occasional evenings and weekends as needed for the job  
  • Ability and willingness to travel by ground and air transport up to 25%, including some overnight travel
