The Senior Advisor, Multicultural Leadership serves as a strategic Senior Advisor to the Senior Vice President, Multicultural Leadership (MCL), and the Vice President, MCL for African American/Black Strategy and Outreach (as well as various other units across the enterprise). Specializes in African American/Black strategy development and outreach. 

Assists in the planning, development, and evaluation of the enterprises multicultural activities (education, information, outreach, advocacy, membership and others related to both social mission and membership support) to help achieve performance goals and targets.  Works to ensures robust strategy execution within the context of achieving Dashboard outcomes and social mission goals. Develops and successfully executes strategic and operational plans to achieve same. Serves as primary liaison to other units who are lead for implementing and executing multicultural strategy. 

  • Serves as a departmental resource on multicultural strategy requirements and works with Multicultural Leadership to ensure achievement of departmental performance goals and targets
  • Plays a role in development of the strategic guidance and support for the states in the development and execution of multicultural planning for African American/Black (and other) audiences. 
  • Serves as an expert resource on key multicultural audiences, and especially African American/Black. Also a resource for LGBT issues.
  • Leads matrix team efforts addressing specific multicultural audience projects assignments
Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serves as a member of the MCL team and is responsible for developing targeted multicultural strategic plans that promotes awareness of and engagement with AARP in targeted (and specifically African American/Black) multicultural communities and tracks metrics for success.  Provides support to other units and departments as needed. 
  • Assists with the development and matrix manages pro-active, innovative and effective strategies to promote AARP’s work in multicultural communities internally and externally.
  • Provides input in establishing, developing, and expanding non revenue producing strategic relationships with external organizations and individuals that enhance the reputation of AARP with targeted segments.
  • Responsible for developing strategic relationships with opinion leaders, 
  • Supports Association goals for the recruitment and retention of volunteers and members from diverse communities.
  • Works with appropriate functional units across the Association to maximize internal and external resources to leverage AARP involvement and connection with multicultural communities, enhancing coordination and maximizing overall effectiveness and impact.
  • When appropriate convenes cross- Association working groups to support efforts.
  • Assists in development of and responsible for tracking audience measurements Works with other functional units to ensure alignment and consistency with other strategies and tactics.
  • Works in collaboration with other Multicultural Leadership staff, state colleagues and national office staff to promote AARP’s strategic issues, priorities, programs, and activities.  As appropriate, facilitates interaction and communication with partners to provide technical assistance and support.
  • Collaborates with and supports state and national communications staff and media partners, makes multicultural presentations to other business units and at workshops and conferences regarding AARP’s strategic priorities as needed.  Enhances AARP’s capacity to speak with relevance in targeted communities by raising awareness of needs, challenges and opportunities associated with communicating in a culturally relevant way to diverse communities with the state, regional and national offices.
  • Assists with monitoring the public dialogue about issues important to AARP and multicultural audiences through collaborations and integration with appropriate national office colleagues. 
  • Represents AARP on external coalitions and working groups as needed.
  • Personally manages key strategic alliances and leads key strategic projects.
  • Exhibits AARP values in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s (advanced degree preferred) in organizational, project or program management, business administration or other field aligned to the development of performance strategies and monitoring of outcomes.   
Skills/Experience: 
  • 8+ years of related experience or a combination of education and experience in the field of performance strategy development, tracking and management. 
  • Position requires excellent interpersonal skills, ability to inform, educate, motivate and work with others at all levels to ensure high performance and achievement of strategic goals. 
  • Strong, clear communications skills; creativity, adaptability and flexibility in dealing with programmatic options. 
  • Requires background and expertise in multicultural marketing, programming and/or outreach.
  • Bilingual skills may be required if working with H/L segment based on the needs of the membership segment supported.
