Sr. Advisor, Ethics and Compliance Investigations

Conducts and leads forensic investigations of possible misconduct for AARP and its affiliated entities (herein referred to as “AARP”).  Collaborates with other investigator(s) in the conduct of investigations designed to prove or disprove allegations, including the identification of control weaknesses that enabled misconduct or fraud to occur, as well as identifying possible process improvements.  Prepares reports for management and the Board of Directors/Audit Committee, outlining findings and recommending actions to be taken to address findings, identified risks, and to prevent similar issues from happening in the future.  Performs follow-up reviews to ensure issues raised previously have been appropriately addressed, as requested.  Assists in awareness training provided to other groups.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Leads and participates in the performance of investigations and special projects of a highly sensitive and/or complex nature, designed to prove or disprove allegations of fraud or other misconduct.  Handles highly confidential information and situations.
  • Prepares and delivers reports on the results of investigations and special projects for management and the Board of Directors, as appropriate, providing objective recommendations for ways to prevent or deter misconduct in the future.
  • Identifies and assesses fraud risks and their implications and identifies root causes for misconduct. Educates and counsels AARP staff and management on appropriate internal controls to manage fraud risks.  Monitors to ensure that management has taken corrective actions to address risks.
  • Participates in the coordination of fraud/misconduct monitoring activities (e.g., risk identification, transaction analysis, data analytics and mining and exception reporting systems, other monitoring controls, etc.) with the internal audit function, including effective and efficient sharing of relevant information between the two functions.  
  • Assists in the ongoing identification and assessment of AARP’s current state of fraud exposure, including assessment of the effectiveness of controls designed to address those exposures.
  • Provides coaching, feedback, and technical training and oversees/directs project performance of investigator(s).
  • Assists in the development and presentation of the enterprise-wide internal control/fraud prevention and detection educational briefings.
  • Stays current on new developments in investigations methods and techniques, forensic accounting methodologies, and best practices in fraud risk management.  Applies learnings, as applicable.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Finance, Accounting, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 8 or more years of a combination of forensic accounting, investigations, and auditing experience.  CFE (Certified Fraud Examiner) or CFF (Certified in Financial Forensics) preferred or willingness to obtain certification within one year, with CPA and CIA a plus.
  • A high energy level and strong work ethic, with a commitment to continuous improvement. 
  • Strong investigative skills and extensive interviewing experience related to the investigation of occupational fraud.
  • Strong written and oral communications skills and the ability to prepare and give briefings and presentations to management.
  • Strong negotiation and persuasion skills, including the ability to effectively deal with conflict and confrontation.
  • Demonstrated ability to lead investigations, meet deadlines, and manage multiple tasks.
  • Demonstrated strong analytical, critical thinking, and project management skills, including the ability to adapt to change quickly.
  • Demonstrated diplomatic and networking skills to work collaboratively with a variety of personalities and work styles and the ability to influence all levels of management.
  • Computer proficiency required (Excel, Word, etc.).  
  • Knowledge of PeopleSoft a plus.
  • Some travel and extended work hours are required.
