World Wildlife Fund (WWF), the world’s leading conservation organization, seeks a Specialist for Media & External Affairs.  Under the direction of the supervisor, the Specialist works with WWF experts and scientists to design and implement public relations tactics, including proactive media relations and digital communications tactics, to advance WWF’s conservation priorities related to freshwater conservation and conservation science.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops and implements comprehensive, integrated, and proactive communications strategies and tactics to promote and support WWF’s goals related to freshwater conservation and conservation science. Identifies audiences, messages, approaches, and other key communications elements, including activities, deliverables, and timetables.
  • Drafts press releases and statements, story pitches, op-eds, blog posts and other communications materials.
  • Proactively engages members of the news media to provide comment on breaking news and pitch story ideas, and reactively fields incoming media requests.
  • Supports digital activities, including social media, content creation, placement of content on third-party platforms, and influencer engagement.
  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with journalists, editors, producers, and other key members of the news media.
  • Cultivates and maintains strong relationships with key internal and external partners, and with other WWF teams across the organization.
  • May travel to field programs, other WWF offices, partner offices, and other locations both domestically and internationally.
Educational Background: 
A Bachelor’s degree is required
Skills/Experience: 
  • Must have at least 4 years of professional experience in public relations, communications, or a related field. A Master’s degree in communications or a related field may substitute for 2 years of experience.
  • A communications background related to science and/or conservation issues is preferred.
  • Strong writing skills essential
  • Ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects is important
  • Must be able to work well under pressure, meet tight deadlines, and balance a workload with competing priorities.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills, especially relationship management skills and the ability to work productively across diverse teams, cultures, and contexts.
  • Experience using multiple digital and social media platforms.
  • Strong organizational and analytical skills are key
  • Highly-motivated, self-starter who knows how to be proactive and take projects and run with them.
  • Must be willing to travel domestically, and internationally as needed
