The successful candidate will develop and implement communications strategies for the Marketing and Engagement (M&E) Education segment at the National Geographic Society. The role requires previous experience with media relations/PR within the education sector, as well as past success in generating and managing content marketing communications for social media platforms. The successful candidate will research and provide recommendations on best practices, ultimately generating communications strategies, campaigns and promotions, and support of online audience engagement.

Areas of Responsibility: 

Communications Strategy (20%)

  • Designs and implements comprehensive communications strategies that elevate the work of National Geographic Education programs, staff, and our growing network of educators.
  • Develops and distributes key messaging for both internal and external partners.

Social Media/ Content Marketing (25%)

  • Curates, writes, and edits materials for @natgeoeducation social handles and blog, promoting organizational priorities and programs.
  • Monitors and joins national and global K-12 education online conversations when possible.
  • Oversees preparation of monthly Educator Network digital newsletter in collaboration with colleagues.

Media Relations (25%)

  • Manages the creation and implementation of effective media strategies and campaigns, ultimately defining media presence to elevate segment within the ever-evolving media landscape.
  • Generates positive traditional and non-traditional media coverage in new and creative ways.
  • Arranges interviews and creates calendar of potential media story opportunities; maintains relationships with reporters, bloggers and other media influencers in the education space
  • Writes and edits communications materials including press releases, media advisories, media toolkits, talking points, blogs, op-eds, etc.
  • Monitors, tracks, and circulates pertinent media coverage.

Audience Engagement/Audience Growth (10%)

  • Develops approach(es) to increase engagement with existing target audience(s) and determines strategies to engage current and new audiences in new and exciting ways.  
  • Develops strategies to increase traffic to NatGeoEd.org website.  
  • Manages audience relations and constituent requests responding in a timely manner to all online chatter, comments, and inquiries.
  • Proactively seeks communication/engagement opportunities with external partners.

Project Management (20%)

  • Provides copy editing and/or manages relationship(s) with external copy editors.
  • Works with creative and video teams to generate new or existing content for various content platforms
  • Other projects as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree required
Skills/Experience: 
  • 3+ years of relevant experience
  • This position requires a creative and strategic communications professional who is knowledgeable and has managed developing content on social platforms currently within our portfolio - Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Google+, blog - as well as those being used by partner or competitor organizations.  
  • Prior media relations experience in the education space with proven media contacts is a must.
  • The ideal candidate must have an appreciation of student learning and the teaching profession with a solid background in K-12 formal and/or informal education, educational publishing, or previous experience working in a communications role at a youth services organization that focuses largely on K-12 issues. Teaching experience appreciated but not required.
  • The ideal candidate will be comfortable working independently or in collaboration with colleagues. Above all, the ideal candidate is a results-driven, collaborative team player who works to push forward organizational goals and priorities and is able to manage multiple, competing priorities simultaneously.
