Washington, D.C., USA
Full-time

NRDC’s Litigation Team seeks to hire a senior attorney with extensive trial and discovery experience. The Litigation Team is a group of approximately 30 lawyers and 7 litigation assistants who collaborate across several NRDC offices. The team pursues litigation across a broad range of environmental, public health, and environmental justice issues. We have filed lawsuits resisting the Trump Administration’s efforts to dismantle environmental protections, including cases defending national monuments, challenging the suspension of clean water safeguards, opposing offshore drilling and seismic exploration, and protecting energy efficiency standards. We also have a growing docket of environmental enforcement cases against government and private party polluters. This includes cases to protect the people of Newark, New Jersey and Flint, Michigan, from lead in drinking water; to remediate toxic pollution in the Penobscot River in Maine; to abate mold in New York City public housing for residents with asthma; and to halt air pollution from a coal-fired power plant in Illinois.

Areas of Responsibility:
  • Litigate environmental enforcement cases in federal court, including through contested evidentiary hearings and in trial.
  • Conduct and oversee fact and expert discovery.
  • Draft pleadings; brief and argue motions.
  • Coach more junior lawyers with varying levels of trial experience.
Educational Background:
Successful candidates must be admitted to the bar in the jurisdiction in which they will practice law at NRDC, or must be willing to complete the requirements for admission to that bar promptly.
Skills/Experience:
  • Significant experience as lead trial counsel in federal court.
  • Extensive discovery experience, including drafting and responding to written discovery and taking and defending fact and expert depositions.
  • Excellent writing and oral advocacy skills.
  • Some experience with environmental or public interest litigation.
  • Demonstrated commitment to coaching lawyers and providing opportunities for professional growth.
  • Ability to motivate and inspire a case team.
  • Creativity and resourcefulness.
  • Ability to work well with colleagues in different offices and with varying levels of experience.
  • Sense of humor and positive attitude.
  • Ability to engage in occasional travel.

About Us
Mission:

The Natural Resources Defense Council's purpose is to safeguard the Earth: its people, its plants and animals and the natural systems on which all life depends.

We work to restore the integrity of the elements that sustain life -- air, land and water -- and to defend endangered natural places.

We seek to establish sustainability and good stewardship of the Earth as central ethical imperatives of human society. NRDC affirms the integral place of human beings in the environment.

We strive to protect nature in ways that advance the long-term welfare of present and future generations.

We work to foster the fundamental right of all people to have a voice in decisions that affect their environment. We seek to break down the pattern of disproportionate environmental burdens borne by people of color and others who face social or economic inequities. Ultimately, NRDC strives to help create a new way of life for humankind, one that can be sustained indefinitely without fouling or depleting the resources that support all life on Earth.
