NPR Newscasts are the most listened-to content in public radio with 28.5 million weekly radio listeners and millions more on apps, smart speakers and other digital platforms. The unit produces 37 live newscasts a day.  The afternoon-drive Senior Producer is a unit leader; accountable for the operational and editorial integrity of the broadcasts and the main point of contact for member stations and the various NPR desks that provide newscast content.  

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Coordinates flow of news and assignments, supervising preparation of news copy and tape for newscasters, including assignment of audio for use in newscasts.
  • Assigns and edits news stories from staff, freelance and contract reporters in coordination with appropriate editors.
  • Jointly responsible with the anchors for the proper execution of all newscasts. This includes ensuring all audio loads are correct for newscasts, that anchors get into the studio on time, and listening to every live newscast on their shift.
  • Maintains liaison with ATC show producers to avoid redundancy of reporter spots with program led stories; with IT, Operations and Engineering staff to support the maintenance of NPR technical production standards.
  • Maintains liaison with NPR member stations, freelance reporters, and other contributors to ensure expeditious coverage of breaking and long-term news stories. Accepts or declines story pitches and is first point of contact for all member stations seeking to file for Newscast.
  • Maintains liaison with other program producers and Operations Desk as needed to assist in coordinating coverage of news stories.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or equivalent combination of education and experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum 5 to 6 years network broadcast experience focusing on news.
  • Considerable knowledge of basic and advanced principles of audio production for information and news programming.
  • Significant writing ability and editorial judgment required.
  • Significant planning skills required.
  • Proven ability to work collaboratively. .

PREFERRED SKILLS

  • Digital audio editing experience.
