The Senior Policy Advisor works with the AARP Public Policy Institute’s health team and across the Enterprise on prescription drug policy-related issues. The position involves identifying and communicating key policy challenges and potential solutions that will help AARP advocate and promote transformational social changes in line with AARP’s enterprise priorities. These key policy areas cover a broad and deep range of diverse issues affecting Americans age 50+ and their families, including prescription drug pricing, utilization, and coverage.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Identifies major policy challenges related to prescription drugs, including pricing, utilization, and coverage.
  • Develops prescription drug-related policy options and reform strategies to enable AARP to advocate and promote transformational social changes in line with AARP’s enterprise priorities.
  • Conducts and oversees the conduct of original research projects on high visibility and potentially controversial prescription drug-related policy issues of importance to AARP.
  • Independently analyzes data and produces timely, well-written fact sheets, policy briefs, and research reports. 
  • Analyzes federal and state legislative and regulatory proposals and legislation, provides objective policy analysis to inform AARP’s public outreach and advocacy efforts, represents AARP in important public policy forums, and serves as an expert resource to AARP staff and volunteer leaders, as well as to opinion leaders and policymakers outside AARP. 
  • Supports AARP’s strategic efforts in collaboration with other members of the Health team and the larger enterprise.
  • Provides objective policy analysis and expert guidance for timely use by key internal clients. Evaluates current policy positions and provides extensive input for the drafting of The Policy Book:  AARP’s Public Policies.
  • Develops policy options and forward-looking strategies to enable AARP to promote changes in public policy and the general marketplace that make it possible for 50+ Americans to live a better life. 
  • Serves as focal point within AARP for issue expertise, participating in and influencing strategic planning and decision-making by actively serving on committees, teams, and working groups.
Educational Background: 
Completion of an advanced degree in Pharmacy, Public Health, or a related discipline,
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 4 years of experience related to the position.  Completion of a Doctorate degree preferred.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of prescription drug policy and related issues including working knowledge of Medicare and Medicaid coverage and reimbursement, state and federal regulation, pharmaceutical supply chain, and current policy solutions.
  • Strong data analytical skills, including ability to independently analyze data; ability to write data-driven fact sheets, policy briefs, and research reports.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a team environment, including building strategic and solid partnerships with colleagues across AARP, such as AARP state offices to advance AARP's policy goals.
  • Excellent written and oral communications skills.
  • Ability to present subject matter and data for all types of audiences.
  • Familiarity with different forms of communication (e.g. written, oral, print/broadcast media, and digital/social media).
  • Excellent interpersonal and partnership development skills.
