NPR’s Business Desk is looking for a Senior Editor to help drive and manage news coverage. The candidate should have deep knowledge of business news, with an understanding of the economy, financial markets, media, consumer finance, workplace and technology. We are looking for a big picture thinker who has a passion for storytelling and crafting coverage strategy, an understanding of NPR's audience, and a sense of fun.

We expect this person to bring creativity, energy and sophistication to our business coverage, qualities that align with NPR's mission of providing original reporting, insightful analysis and high level explanatory journalism. The editor must have excellent news judgment, the ability to work under deadline pressure and work collaboratively with editors across the network.

The job includes preparation of on-air material as well as content for digital and social platforms. This editor oversees the editorial integrity and quality of content, monitors and evaluates staff performance. Under the direction of the Chief Business Editor, and in collaboration with other key news leaders, the Senior Editor will be involved in overall conception and vision of NPR’s business coverage on all platforms.

Our coverage is featured on NPR Newscast, Morning Edition, All Things Considered, NPR.org, Up First, Here & Now among other platforms.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Generate story ideas and review story pitches.
  • Assign, develop and edit original stories from team members.
  • Help develop storytelling approaches and sources and determine the best platform for news coverage, including making suggestions for interviews and establishing contacts.
  • Coordinate coverage plan with shows, digital editors and other desks.
  • Protect the editorial integrity and quality of news online and on the air, ensuring that all stories meet NPR program standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity and balance.
  • Provide feedback to supervisors for performance evaluations.
  • Other duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university or equivalent required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • About 10 years of news reporting or editing. Business news experience preferred.
  • Strong familiarity with business topics, including, but not limited to: media, consumer finance, and workplace.
  • Considerable skill in both news and feature editing. Investigative editing, a plus.
  • Knowledge of audio production.
  • Experience in digital media, including editing stories.
  • Experience in editorial decision-making, including assigning reporters/correspondents.
  • Ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously under stringent timeframes and changing priorities/conditions.
  • Ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure.
