The Sr. Director of State Affairs is responsible for: (1) leading state government relations efforts across all fifty states; (2) monitoring developments in the state affairs environment; (3) ensuring a solid policy foundation for state affairs efforts; (4) representing the Association in state affairs coalitions; and, (5) maintaining compliance with relevant legal obligations.
This position reports to the Chief Public Policy Officer and will be based at the Association's office in Washington D.C. with frequent travel.
The Sr. Director of State Affairs is responsible for ensuring that the following responsibilities are accomplished, either directly or by delegation:
- Managing state government relations efforts by:
- Guiding the execution of campaigns in all fifty states to advance the Association's nationwide state policy priorities;
- Representing the Association before state governments and with relevant state government associations;
- Serving as liaison between state governments and other divisions of the Association;
- Coordinating with Association advocacy staff on the execution of grassroots actions by volunteers in support of state affairs objectives; and,
- Preparing materials to equip both field staff and volunteers to advocate effectively in support of state affairs objectives.
- Monitoring developments in the state affairs environment by:
- Discovering,
- Analyzing, and,
- Reporting state government related developments that could materially impact efforts by the Alzheimer's Association to accomplish shared strategic objectives.
- Maintaining a foundation for effective state affairs by:
- Identifying state policy positions that should be created or modified;
- Collaboratively working with field staff in the creation or modification of state policy platforms and priorities in all 50 states;
- Ensuring that there is at all times a clear, shared understanding of state policy priorities across the Alzheimer's Association; and,
- Managing the development of state proposals and initiatives to advance state policy positions.
- Representing the Alzheimer's Association in state affairs coalitions.
- Ensuring compliance with legal obligations assumed by the Alzheimer's Association in the execution of the above responsibilities.

Key success factors for this role include strong interpersonal skills and extensive knowledge of the workings of state governments. The successful candidate will be independent, adaptable, able to reprioritize and shift gears quickly and be comfortable in a high-pressure environment. Eloquent yet succinct communication and public speaking skills are essential. In addition, s/he must possess an exceptional capacity to network and build coalition support, impeccable attention to detail, as well as the ability and desire to work in a fast-paced dynamic and collegial setting.
This position will require frequent travel (mostly domestic). Must possess valid driver's license and good driving record.
EDUCATION & EXPERIENCE:
- Ten years working in a health focused non-profit in state government affairs or similar experience.
- Strong background in health policy, health legislation, and other regulatory and political issues.
- Ability and willingness to travel up to 20%
