The individual serving in this position oversees the LLS policy development process in support of advancing LLS’s federal and state advocacy agenda. This agenda includes, among other things, reducing the cost burden that patients encounter when accessing cancer care, maintaining and enforcing patient protections established by the Affordable Care Act, ensuring access to high-quality cancer care among patients regardless of their type of insurance, strengthening and accelerating the process of drug development and approval in the United States, and improving the sustainability of the cancer care system for future patients. To accomplish this work, the Senior Director will partner closely with OPP leadership team colleagues, including the Senior Directors leading the State Affairs, Federal Affairs, and Advocacy components of the OPP team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Serve as OPP’s go-to source of knowledge and insight regarding the health care policy landscape, keeping OPP leadership apprised of emerging trends and other movement relevant to LLS’s mission
  • Work closely with the OPP leadership team to develop LLS’s annual slate of policy priorities and to adjust those priorities throughout the year as needed
  • Oversee the production and maintenance of LLS position statements and supporting collateral, working in partnership with government affairs and policy counterparts to review/tailor materials as needed day-to-day
  • Grow LLS’s visibility in the policy arena by representing the organization in relevant speaker’s venues and by developing alliances with policy counterparts at key patient organizations, provider associations, payor community and industry partners
  • Cultivate strong working relationships with partner colleagues based in LLS’s national office, including the organization’s communications team and the Office of the Chief Medical Officer
  • Oversee issue education for OPP staff and, as requested, support the education of LLS advocates, working closely with government affairs, policy and advocacy counterparts to identify area of need and to execute trainings
  • Design and collaborate in the delivery of internal policy briefings to the organization’s senior and/or executive leadership team, both proactively and in response to requests
  • Manage OPP’s policy consultants, ensuring that their expertise is fully utilized and that deliverables are timely and of high-quality
  • Serve as a liaison to the LLS Public Policy Advisory Committee, working closely with the Vice President, Office of Public Policy to keep the committee apprised of LLS’s policy priorities and to engage the committee in providing directional input
  • Maintain a strong understanding of LLS’s patient access programs and revenue-generating campaigns, to help promote the organization and its initiatives as needed
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in a relevant area of study, e.g. health care administration or public policy 
Skills/Experience: 
  • 8+ years’ experience working in health care policy or advanced degree (preferred) with a minimum of 4 years’ experience

Position Requirements:

  • Sophisticated understanding of the policy issues dominating health care today 
  • Proven ability to communicate effectively in both verbal and written formats 
  • Experience anticipating public policy trends in the health care sector 
  • Strong understanding of the current political environment and of policy-making processes at the state and federal level, including both legislative and regulatory processes 
  • Experience working across multiple functions within an organization to advance team- and enterprise-level goals
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaborative and achieve consensus across a matrix environment
