Business Optimization is an internal consulting team that collaborates with leaders across AARP to address some of their biggest and most complex challenges. Team members bring expertise in integrating strategy and operations and applying structured analytical and problem-solving skills to improve performance.

The Senior Advisor, Business Optimization independently drives activities along the full lifecycle of a client engagement, working as an internal consultant to identify, analyze, and diagnose root causes of organizational / operational problems, identify solution options and associated organizational needs, and recommend courses of action. This includes partnering with stakeholders to understand all aspects of a situation and the pros and cons of alternative approaches.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Advise clients and colleagues on ways to improve operational effectiveness, project execution and decision-making
  • Manage Enterprise-wide operational improvement consulting engagements of varying degrees of complexity; this includes developing the scope of work with clients, leveraging consulting frameworks for problem definition & analysis, managing risks, synthesizing findings, guiding communications, and defining implementation activities
  • Manage expectations and perceptions of both clients and other stakeholders
  • Demonstrate flexibility and adaptability to changing demands and deadlines. Effectively manage organizational complexity and ambiguity.
  • Use a logical, coherent, and consistent approach to problem-solving. Challenge assumptions and probe for detail.
  • Persuasively present recommendations to clients and stakeholders to achieve specific outcomes
  • Prepare and present relevant reports and documents regarding projects’ operational status, achievement, and performance
  • Identify new project / partnership opportunities that enhance AARP’s operational efficiency and effectiveness
  • Serve as a team member on other relevant projects within the Business Optimization Department
  • Stay abreast of new analytical and consulting frameworks, methods and leading practices to aid in the work of the department
  • Other duties as assigned

Complexity:

  • Requires ability to interact across all levels of AARP including managing relationships at the highest level of the organization and across departments.  Ensures senior management at AARP is continually updated and satisfied with the project’s progress. 
  • Uses experience and expert judgment to engage with senior executives and vice presidents to discuss and define their enterprise-wide initiatives and associated business challenges.
  • Works effectively in complex environments involving competing priorities, ambiguity, uncertainties and political sensitivities
  • Establishes effective network (primarily VPs and Directors) to understand organizational / operational barriers and inform solution options
  • Communicates effectively with L-Team members on complex issues and recommended solutions
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s Degree, MBA or advanced degree preferred,
Skills/Experience: 
  • 8+ years of relevant experience in at least three or more of the following areas: strategy development, performance improvement, business analysis, quantitative analysis, operating model or service delivery design, process optimization and change management
  • 5+ years of experience working with a major consulting firm in strategy, performance improvement, operational analysis and solution design with significant client interface (e.g. project scoping, progress reviews, presenting findings & recommendations)
  • Successful track record of delivering high-impact operational improvement projects and guiding implementation efforts (e.g. facilitating stakeholder buy-in to achieve sustainable results)
  • Demonstrated ability to develop and lead cross-functional, matrix project teams toward common goals and strategic objectives while fostering strong relationships with all stakeholders.
  • Excellent written, verbal, visual/presentation and interpersonal communications skills with ability to synthesize results into an effective narrative and successfully present ideas to senior management
  • Lean Six-Sigma Green or Black Belt, PMP, or other professional certification preferred.
