The Researcher, National Geographic GeoBee researches, documents and is charged with ensuring the accuracy and suitability of all editorial content for the GeoBee. Assists in the production of contest-related materials and archives competition content. Assists editor in various phases of the editorial process, and assists the Student Experiences team with logistics duties related to running student events.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Research: Verifies accuracy of all editorial content and documents this process using authoritative publications and/or primary resource material. Prepares comments, corrections or rewrites, taking into account feedback from various reviewers, and reports all necessary changes to the GeoBee Editorial Manager. (60%)
  • Content Development: Assists GeoBee Editorial Manager on the development of written and visual content, including brainstorming topic ideas, performing background research, and writing. (10%)
  • Production: Assists GeoBee Editorial Manager the production of competition visuals for school, state, and national GeoBee competitions, such as maps, graphs, and photos, and ensures the accuracy of this material. Works with NG Maps and designers as needed. Also coordinates the production of other contest materials for the state and national levels, such as state branding toolkit and national signage. Assists GeoBee Editorial Manager with production of content for digital projects and works with digital team on updates to digital products. (15%)
  • Content Management: Archives competition content and tracks the use of GeoBee question content by newspapers, international partners, National Geographic products, etc., to avoid duplication and overuse of content. Handles requests for GeoBee questions. (10%)
  • Other duties for various Student Experiences projects as assigned. Collaborate within Experiences and throughout the Society around projects and content. Participates in department-wide programs and innovation. Stays current with NGS mission, research, initiatives and media. (5%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree in geography required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • 1-2 years of experience in research.
  • Editorial-related experience, including researching written material for accuracy.
  • Excellent organizational skills and attention to detail, and ability to prioritize and work under deadlines.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills.
  • Ability to tend to multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficiency with software including Microsoft Office, Mac OS, Adobe Acrobat Pro and familiarity with other Adobe products.
  • Collaborative team player, capable of working independently and being resourceful when required.
