Reporting & Writing Specialist, NPR Training

The NPR Training team is seeking an outstanding, veteran journalist who loves talking about what makes great reporting and writing; who can break down the elements of great reporting and writing and turn that into training.  This role requires one who has the confidence to work with the most experienced journalists and the enthusiasm to work with the newest interns.

This specialist role will find creative ways to guide learning in person and online and is someone informed by prior journalism experience but always looking for innovative news-gathering techniques. Continuous learning is key. 

You’ll lead training workshops at NPR, member stations and a variety of industry conferences.  A strong candidate will create signature training guides, drawing from the expertise and experience of some of the best journalists in America.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop curriculum on reporting and writing for NPR and member station newsrooms, to include digital writing (news and feature), sourcing, fact-checking, and social reporting
  • Design engaging in-person and remote/online training sessions
  • Create original material for the NPR Training site (http://www.npr.org/training) and social platforms
  • Coordinate and lead team training initiatives on behalf of the team at NPR, member stations and industry conferences
  • Collaborate with key stakeholders across the newsroom
  • Public presentation, group communication/facilitation skills
  • Proven ability to report and write with distinction
  • Strong record of high journalistic standards, including standards of fairness, accuracy and inclusion
  • Proven ability to handle multiple and complex projects simultaneously
  • Demonstrated ability to work independently and with members of a team
  • Strong communication skills
  • Record of collegial work
  • Ability to travel when needed
  • Perform other duties as assigned
Educational Background: 
Bachelor's degree or equivalent work experience
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 8 years’ journalism experience with a minimum 5 years reporting

  • Demonstrated ability to nurture and improve the work of others
  • Experience engaging audiences around online content
  • Editing experience
  • Audio storytelling
  • Fluency with digital platforms i.e. Wordpress, Google Analytics, social media
