NPR’s Research, Archives & Data Strategy (RAD) team partners with all programs and divisions to address a wide spectrum of information needs and to maintain NPR’s complete digital archive. As part of our continuing cutting-edge digital product development work, we are recruiting an intern to contribute to our current and future data standardization objectives. Our intern will gain an in-depth understanding of the uses of metadata in a unique setting.
Please note: Our internship at NPR headquarters is a full time (Monday-Friday) opportunity. Please send us both a cover letter and resume for full consideration.
Working under the supervision of RAD team members, our Data Strategy Intern will:
- Increase discoverability of audio, video and music content through metadata enhancement and standardization of data
- Survey legacy digital audiovisual files and their folder structures and recommend workflow for future migration
- Contribute to the iterative improvements of our workflows and initiatives
- Propose, evaluate and test new features and bug repairs for our RAD products
- Participate in all scrum activities; provide daily team updates and present progress to stakeholders
- Document best practices and lessons learned through this work
- Participate in RAD’s social media efforts
Must be a current student in an accredited degree program or a recent graduate of no more than 12 months from the month of the start of the internship.
Our best internship candidates understand the value of well-curated metadata and information science, and are conversant with emerging trends in our fields. You should be good at managing your time and deadlines. We will need you to communicate effectively and craft accurate work – be it on your own, with our team or with other NPR colleagues.
We prize exceptional storytelling and want to learn more about you, so tell us in your cover letter and resume about your:
- Familiarity with XML and other metadata schemas
- Experience with creating and standardizing metadata for databases
- Ability to balance attention to detail and accuracy while understanding “the big picture” of project and product work
- Experience establishing priorities among competing demands
- Interest in growth and willingness to respond to professional feedback
- Written and oral communication skills
