QA Engineer, Smart Speaker & Emerging Platforms

Emerging platforms, including Smart Speakers such as Amazon Alexa & Google Home comprise one of our largest growing ways in which we touch audiences nationwide. NPR’s Digital Media department is at the forefront of these efforts, and your job is to help us deliver the best, high quality experience possible for NPR’s consumers.

In this role, you will work on Scrum project teams in every aspect of quality assurance, from hands-on testing of user stories to assessing release readiness - and everything in between. A heavy emphasis on exploratory testing and an ability to focus on user experience is required for this role. Successful applicants will be able to positively interact with all disciplines in our team: product and interaction designers, developers, product owners, and Scrum Masters.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Perform hands-on testing of user stories as a part of the Scrum iteration
  • Ability to master the technical possibilities and limitations of smart speaker platforms to inform test strategy
  • Prepare for and lead test sessions as part of feature releases
  • Isolate, reproduce, and track bugs through verification of the fix
  • Create and maintain a set of regression test cases
  • Create tools and scripts to aid in the efficiency of test setup, preparation, and execution
  • Communicate and collaborate closely with developers, designers, and product owners to develop the fullest possible understanding of the software and address issues that arise
Educational Background: 
Practical experience as a QA Engineer, Software Developer, or otherwise equivalent position
Skills/Experience: 
  • Basic proficiency in any programming programming language (e.g. Java, JavaScript, PHP, etc.)
  • Experience directly interacting with API’s (e.g. using tools such as Postman)
  • Experience in creating test plans, test cases, and leading test sessions
  • Intermediate knowledge of SQL queries
  • Knowledge of the Linux command line
  • Proven track record of project execution in an Agile environment with rapid release cycles
  • Outstanding verbal and written communication skills
  • Bonus: Previous hands-on experience with device or mobile application
  • Bonus: Background with automating tests using a testing framework (e.g. Nightwatch, Selenium or Appium)
  • Bonus: An interest in the mission of NPR and / or public media or not-for-profit work
