Project Manager, State and Community Engagement

This Washington D.C. based position reports to the lead within State and Community Engagement for the 60th Anniversary Parks Project and will serve as the day-to-day liaison for the installation of intergenerational fitness parks in each of the states, D.C., Puerto Rico and the Virgin Islands over a 3 year period.  This position will work closely with the external vendor and internal stakeholders including but not limited to Community, State and National, Integrated Communications and Marketing, the Executive Team and the AARP Board of Directors.  The Project Manager will have the opportunity to be at the forefront of highlighting AARP’s priority areas including deepening our local presence, improving a community’s livability for residents of all ages and encouraging healthy behaviors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Oversees process for site selection in each state
  • Oversees the vendor/state office relationship with the ability to provide real-time status reports
  • Exercises leadership when working with staff throughout AARP and with external organizations to ensure that strategic and tactical plans are implemented, as designed
  • Participates as the primary staff lead for the cross-functional 60th Anniversary Parks Project Advisory Team
  • Tracks and reports on post-production Fitness Lot programming and works with vendor to track usage
  • Coordinates overall communications plan and works with ICM, Communications Interims and states to implement
  • Works with administrative support to track per-site budgets
Educational Background: 
Completion of an Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Marketing, Communications, Public Administration, Business, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 4+ years’ experience in program management, coordination, and implementation techniques at the national and local (state) levels; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
  • Must have highly developed project management skills.  
  • Superior written and oral communication skills required.  
  • Demonstrated ability to organize and successfully manage multiple tasks simultaneously required.
  • Demonstrated ability to work well with others, matrix-management, lead project teams, task forces, and to collaborate with and forge effective internal and external partnerships across groups and departments, connecting with and exhibiting a solid understanding of partnerships is required.
  • Must have the ability to innovate and adapt under pressure.
  • Ability to travel up to 25% of the time is preferred.
