The Oceans Goal seeks a Program Officer for our Fisheries team under the supervision of the Manager Marine Portfolio. This position will assist with the planning, coordination, communication and implementation of program priorities and activities in areas of assignment. The position will be required to assist with projects focused on the use of rights based and other incentive based tools to improve management of small producer and tuna fisheries. Travel to Southeast Asia and Latin America will likely account for 25% of the Program Officer’s overall work program. The person in this role may also develop and plan regional programs and field projects.
Areas of Responsibility:
- Assists the smooth operation of fisheries projects focused on the use of incentive based tools to reform small producer and tuna fisheries. The Program Officer will organize internal communications, internal and external meetings with WWF offices and external partners, follow up, and provide backstopping as needed.
- Monitors and analyzes new technical information, policy development issues, and trends related to key fisheries issues and advises others accordingly. Keeps abreast of issues in other related Oceans areas.
- Develop training materials for industry and government stakeholders.
- Supports development of proposals and plans for funding from private foundations and/or government aid agencies. Assists with fundraising proposals and reports. Prepares and/or finalizes scopes of work, budgets, and administrative information for contracts and to ensure compliance with donor requirements.
- Provides support in the development of communications assets, including the drafting of messaging documents, publications, blogs and other digital content, and presentations.
- Assists in efforts to coordinate amongst network and external (partner) contacts to identify storytelling opportunities to promote priority issues and messages.
- Performs other duties as assigned.
Educational Background:
A Bachelor’s degree is required; preferably in a related field such as natural resources management, environmental science, coastal management, or conservation policy. A graduate degree is preferred, and will substitute for 2 years of work experience
Skills/Experience:
- Must have at least 4 years of experience in biodiversity conservation and understanding of international conservation issues
- Familiarity with fisheries preferred
- Excellent organizational skills
- Excellent research and writing skills
- Strong project management skills
- Ability to operate with independence, under pressure, to meet deadlines and commitments
- Good interpersonal skills
- Fluency in Spanish preferred.
