Weekend All Things Considered is NPR’s influential, informative, and thought-provoking weekend evening news magazine. WATC is seeking a highly skilled, creative journalist to join the team. The Producer will play a leading role in shaping the show’s coverage of news and feature stories. The successful candidate can respond quickly during breaking news, and plan and execute long-term creative projects. The Producer will serve as Line Producer, leading the production team for the live program as needed. He/she will also plan and produce large and complex daily and long-term packages, host field projects and initiatives that drive the editorial agenda for the show.
- Ability to conceptualize, plan and produce program materials for current and future shows, with minimal editorial supervision.
- Must generate consistently well thought-out story/interview ideas on a timely basis.
- As needed for critical execution of the show this role will act as line producer for the on-air production of NPR programs, both regularly scheduled programs and special reports, with minimal editorial supervision.
- As scheduled by the Executive Producer, this role will occasionally work in the field with hosts and NPR reporters, (including projects requiring extensive research and high-level editorial judgment).
- Will work as director as assigned.
- Demonstrate ability to build and maintain internal relationships with program & production staff along with reporters.
- Demonstrate ability to maintain external relationships with news sources and journalists from other media, including the online digital community.
- Ability to maintain working knowledge of all the latest sound-gathering and filing technologies in use at NPR (with regular up-to-date training as required).
- Performs other duties as assigned, including, but not limited to, the possibility of newsroom rotations to support other NPR news magazines, newscast unit, news gathering desks, programming or other editorial teams as required.
- At least four (4) years of experience as a reporter, editor, or producer.
- Demonstrated excellent writing ability.
- Strong oral communication skills
- Experience working on a live, daily news show.
- Experience producing live and breaking coverage.
- Understanding of journalistic ethics. Experience maintaining high journalistic standards under deadline pressure, including standards of objectivity, balance and fairness.
- Demonstrated ability to generate and execute complex creative ideas, to assimilate and organize large amounts of information.
- Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system.
- Ability and willingness to relocate. In the future, NPR may choose to transfer employees to other geographic locations.
PREFERRED COMPETENCIES & SKILLS
- Six (6+) years’ experience in journalism, including direct experience producing high quality radio journalism
- At least two (2) years’ experience in editorial decision making with demonstrated ability to exercise solid, independent news judgment.
