In this capacity, the Sr. Policy Research Analyst requires the ability to initiate and complete work independently, to collaborate with senior staff on projects, to plan and manage one’s workload, and to complete work under tight time pressures.  Employee must exercise good judgment in providing research assistance and technical advice to stakeholders throughout the organization. This requires a thorough understanding of the nature of the subject matter and the ability to interpret both the issue behind each request and the available data. The employee will be required to exercise judgment, tact, and time management in determining how to meet competing ad hoc requests.  The employee will occasionally represent the AARP Public Policy Institute at internal and external meetings.  By providing factual information and technical advice, the employee will have a direct impact on the achievement of AARP’s goals and strategic priorities.  The employee will assemble data that identify problems faced by Americans age 50+ and others, and leads to the development of policy solutions.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Collaborate with colleagues to develop materials to support team projects, conduct literature reviews, prepare presentations, and write policy research reports.
  • Under the direction of senior staff, accesses a variety of data sources and uses appropriate research methods to prepare data, analyze policy issues and develop solutions.
  • Assist in the development of policy in the areas of financial security and consumer protection. 
  • Monitors legislative, regulatory, and public policy trends in assigned areas of expertise.
  • Demonstrates AARP values in all interactions.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Public Policy, Economics, Finance, Statistics, Econometrics, other Social Science, or a related discipline
Skills/Experience: 
  • 6 years of experience in policy development and/or research required; Master’s degree strongly preferred.
  • Excellent writing and verbal communication skills, including the ability to develop policy-focused social media communications, are required.
  • Proficient in project management, online research, Excel, and PowerPoint. 
  • Familiarity with statistical concepts and applications.  Experience with analyzing and presenting data preferred.
  • Interest in financial security and consumer protection policy issues.
