Policy Advisor - Brain Health

The Policy Advisor works with the Policy & Brain Health team within Policy, Research, and International (PRI) department and across the Enterprise on brain health related issues for AARP. This position will simultaneously manage multiple projects that contribute to the achievement of priorities for the department. This team player has a policy focus and contributes to the Enterprise Initiatives for instances that brain health relates to the health security, financial resilience, and personal fulfillment of people aged 50 and older. This position will also the lead organizer for high level meetings of the Global Council on Brain Health. The position will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of Enterprise initiatives to include, but not limited to: Staying Sharp, Healthy Living, Livable Communities, Caregiving, and Disrupt Aging.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develop and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external contacts to ensure timely and quality completion of projects.  In addition, assists in overseeing and performing project and program analysis.
  • Coordinate logistics, develop briefing materials, maintains a database on brain health experts, and support existing programs relating to brain health. 
  • Plan and implement projects, events, and activities at both the national and international level relating to the Global Council on Brain Health.
  • Organize high profile convenings of the Global Council on Brain Health, an AARP Collaborative, and other brain-health related conferences.  This includes organizing prior telephone conferences and other planning meetings leading up to those convenings. Duties include developing meeting notices, invitations, agendas and meeting materials, and assistance in writing reports as requested.
  • Handle international and domestic travel, procurement management and travel reimbursement for external contacts. Execute financial tasks, such as contracting, invoice processing, and expense reimbursement. Provides budget support for brain health convenings and helps to prepare financial documents in timely manner.
  • Develop time-lines and schedules, monitoring and tracking time-sensitive projects and events to ensure timely and accurate completion.
  • Track, analyze, and summarize research and policy developments relating to brain health and dementia, providing periodic reports to staff and management.
  • Work with colleagues to develop issue briefs on relevant brain health issues.
  • Review and provide policy feedback on Staying Sharp, the digital brain health membership platform.
  • Work with colleagues and contractors to develop communication materials, infographics and other creative data visualizations for AARP brain health-related & GCBH websites, working with ICM colleagues to manage and update these sites. Provide technical support and graphics designs for presentations, reports, and other special projects.
  • Prepare briefing materials, presentations and reports for senior management, as well as other thought leaders participating in AARP's brain health initiatives.
  • Assist in preparation or review of abstracts, posters, content for scientific meetings, conferences, website, and other events and presentations.
  • Coordinate multi-faceted work plans to support brain health projects and initiatives with cross-enterprise teams, creating agendas and executing on social mission objectives.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a bachelor’s degree and a minimum of 5+ years of experience.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Master’s degree in business, management, policy or related field preferred.
  • Strong verbal and written communications skills.
  • Proven project oversight skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work effectively with all levels and across multiple departments.
  • Demonstrated adaptability to handle changing demands and deadlines, and flexibility to navigate organizational complexity and ambiguity.
  • Ability to utilize a logical, coherent, and consistent approach to problem-solving, to challenge assumptions and probes for detail. 
  • Advanced proficiency in Microsoft Office, Social Media and/or project management tools.
  • PMP certification and previous experience working with Adobe, Salesforce, and CVent are a plus.
