The news assistant will perform a variety of tasks for the Washington Desk -- from research and fact checking to gathering sound, arranging travel and working with our engagement team. A passion for politics is required as well as thoroughness and attention to detail.
- Conducts research and assists editors, producers and reporters using NPR Library and external libraries and reference services
- Books interviews as requested by reporters, editors and others, making all arrangements, including reservation of studio time
- Stays current with major political stories and suggests story ideas
- Records press conferences, interviews and events
- Builds audio clipboards for reporters and correspondents
- Contributes to multimedia production, including videos, audiograms, photo galleries, and interactive elements, as assigned
- Advises editors on technical support required, as necessary
- Maintains files of useful experts and other resources for editors, producers, program hosts and other staff
- Fulfills administrative tasks for the Chief Washington Editor and Deputy
- Performs other duties as assigned
- Experience with journalism-related research including an ability to collect, organize and disseminate information
- Strong communication skills
- Ability to handle multiple projects simultaneously under stringent time frames and changing priorities/conditions
- Ability to both work independently and collaborate with others
- Proven ability to consistently work well with others, demonstrating at all times respect for the diverse constituencies at NPR and within the public radio system
- Demonstrated ability to work quickly and efficiently under deadline pressure
- Ability to work varied shifts

- Radio experience
- Experience with a CMS and broadcast digital audio workstations
