The Network Hub Content Manager for the Newsdesk is NPR’s chief liaison with Regional news hubs based at Member stations across the country. This is a new position within a new national networked structure designed to connect the NPR newsroom with regional groups of Member stations. The objective is to bring news and information from the places it happens to the attention of key players at NPR in the most efficient way possible. The Network Hub Content Manager is at the center of that effort. This position will play the critical role of coordinating information from the Regional Hubs with key programs and decision-makers at NPR on both broadcast and digital platforms. This includes NPR news desks including the National desk as well as programs such as Morning Edition and All Things Considered, NPR’s Newscast unit, NPR blogs and digital news teams. This position will report to NPR Deputy Managing Editors.
- Coordinates with the Managing Editor of Regional hubs. At first, this position will be the chief contact with the first pilot hub, planned for Texas.
- Establishes a daily routine for planning coverage with the Regional hub. Ensures that the latest information from the Regions is available for key NPR editorial planning meetings.
- Ensures that all NPR desks and shows -- digital and broadcast -- are informed about stories, news, or information that is being worked by the Regional hub.
- Shares information about NPR coverage plans back with the Regional hub Managing Editor.
- Takes lead responsibility for editorial planning and coordination of coverage involving Regional hubs.
- Coordinates with NPR desk editors: including the National desk, Science, Washington, Business, Arts to ensure that all relevant areas of expertise are aware and can contribute as needed to Regional hub coverage.
- Coordinates with NPR/Member station beat and topic teams: including Education, Health, Energy/Environment, Military/Veterans, State Governance and Criminal Justice to ensure all relevant expertise is aware and can contribute to Regional hub coverage.
- Coordinates with NPR news magazines, including Morning Edition, All Things Considered and Here & Now to ensure the shows are aware and can coordinate with Regional hub coverage.
- Coordinates with NPR newscast.
- Coordinates with Digital news: Digital news editors, NPR.org and NPR One.
- Coordinates with other newsroom specialists including Visual Media and data journalists and the Investigative team as needed and relays information back to Regional hubs.
- Assists program producers at the national and regional level to achieve consistent, accurate and balanced coverage on all platforms.
- Works with the Regional hub Managing Editor to ensures that all material aired and published meets NPR programs' standards and practices, including standards of fairness, objectivity and balance.
- Works with hosts, Newsdesk, digital media and other staff to determine proper approach to stories, subjects to be discussed and treated, and individuals to be interviewed. Assists hosts and staff in establishing contacts. Acts as liaison between those staff and the Regional hub.
- A minimum of seven years of experience as a news reporter or editor.
- Previous managerial experience.
- Demonstrated collaborated approach to newsgathering and story presentation across platforms.
- Thorough knowledge of news and feature reporting techniques and demonstrated writing ability, across multiple platforms.
- Demonstrated experience overseeing editorial output for social media and digital platforms.
- Considerable skill in both news and feature editing.
- Demonstrated skill in oral presentation.
- Understanding and use of principles of effective management.
- Thorough knowledge of broadcast writing and audio production.
- Occasional daily and/or overnight travel may be required.
Preferred Skills:
- Broadcast and specifically radio news experience
- Knowledge and experience working within a “federated” news organization with national and local newsrooms.
