The National Geographic Society is seeking an experienced cataloging professional to provide metadata for mixed-media archival collections, including photographs, film, maps, documents, and artifacts. The ideal candidate will rise to the challenges of cataloging complex material and creating consistency and discoverability.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Creates and maintains metadata as part of the Digital Preservation Archives Initiative, providing access to the digital resources according to recognized standards. Manages and coordinates the process of implementing metadata.   Collaborates with other Library + Archives staff, other departments and digitization team to develop and apply appropriate metadata schemas and standards. (50%)
  • Creates and maintains local documentation on metadata standards and metadata application guidelines for libraries-wide digital collections. Provides quality control for digital object metadata. Participates in evaluating new technologies and developments in digital applications and metadata implementation. (30%)
  • Assists staff in research and use of metadata to connect objects and assets; discoverability of assets. (20%)
Educational Background: 
Master’s in Library Science or Archival Studies from an accredited program preferred.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Two years experience in a research library, archives, or museum setting cataloging special collections material such as manuscripts, prints, and/or photographs, maps, film, video, books and periodicals.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • Background, familiarity with photography, graphic arts, media production, rare books and maps.
  • Knowledge of, and experience in applying electronic, traditional and emerging metadata standards (MARC 21, RDA, AACR2, Dublin Core, etc.).
  • Experience applying and maintaining controlled vocabularies, such as LCNA, LCSH, TGM, ULAN, AAT, etc., and local authorities.
  • Experience in an automated environment using library or archives cataloging software, or similar cataloging environment.
  • Experience working in teams and collaborative environments
  • Effective oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills with ability to communicate complex information effectively.
  • Ability to lift 40 pounds.
