This is a hands-on, entry-level staff position that provides research, organizational and administrative support to the media relations department at NPR. The successful candidate will have experience working or interning for a communications or media relations department, and a basic understanding of, interest in and appreciation for media and public relations practices. S/he will support all media relations staff in the successful publicity of NPR News, programming and journalists, and will gain experience creating and executing media relations practices and strategies. The candidate will conduct extensive research, brainstorm media plans, draft press releases, blogs and social media posts, maintain the department’s database of media contacts, and provide administrative support. The position reports to the Senior Publicist, Media Relations.

The ideal candidate is detail-oriented with strong writing, organizational and interpersonal skills; enthusiasm for a collaborative workplace; and, above all, a willingness to learn. S/he must also be proactive and able to see tasks through to completion; have the ability to juggle multiple, often high-pressure deadlines; and possess an interest in news and media.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Primarily responsible for handling media relations support activities – including but not limited to tracking media results; distributing press releases, coordinating interviews and visits; preparing online multiplatform press kits; escorting film crews; as well as work with the marketing and social media leads within the organization on design and execution of campaigns.
  • Develop, research and produce a variety of publicity materials – including but not limited to press releases, backgrounders, pitch letters, bios, website content and talking points.
  • Work across the marketing, branding and communications department in partnership with staff.
  • Conduct media outreach to contacts in print, broadcast and online, to identify, coordinate and complete publicity opportunities and incoming media requests. Tasks to include story generation, media contacting, research and fact-gathering, management of approval process and internal/external distribution.
  • Support publicity of breaking news and exclusives, often on very short deadlines, as needed and as assigned.
  • Maintain and expand department’s media contact databases.
  • Maintain and grow a cross-section of NPR media relations collateral materials, under direction of supervisor. Post releases on NPR.org. Contribute to the “NPR Extra” blog and social media channels.
  • Perform other duties as required.
  • Provides administrative and telephone support to the NPR media relations staff.
Educational Background: 
A. Degree is required, preferably in communications, political science, or journalism.
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least one year work experience, preferably in a communications or media relations department. Strong internship experience considered. Journalism experience preferred.
  • Knowledge of media or public relations practices preferred.
  • Appetite for news and interest in news, music, arts, culture, politics and media.
  • Strong writing, speaking, organizational and interpersonal skills; detail-oriented a must.
  • Must be able to work independently, after direct supervision.
  • Ability to handle multiple tasks and short deadlines.
  • Creative and resourceful.
  • Enthusiasm for collaborative team workplace; willingness to perform all functions of his/her job.
  • Self-starter with ability to independently initiate and follow through with opportunities.
  • Familiarity with, and interest in, NPR and public broadcasting strongly preferred
