National Geographic Society’s Marketing and Engagement Manager manages the implementation of engagement strategies targeted to US educators, decision makers, and the general public. This role, reporting to the Director, Marketing and Engagement, requires experience with media relations/PR and the ability to manage audience segmentation and tailored communication strategies while managing a year-long calendar of effective programmatic marketing and communications. Key functions include: creation, innovation, and testing of campaign strategies, data and audience segmentation, and customized messaging - specifically email marketing best practices; media relations and PR; budget and project management; and strong interdepartmental communication and leadership.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Integrated Marketing Campaign Management (35%): As a key member of Education Marketing team, manages a portfolio of marketing and engagement campaigns for assigned portfolio of Education products and programs, including but not limited to: project management and creation of print marketing materials, email campaigns, newsletters, social and digital campaigns, SEO/SEM, web/blog, and other tactics as determined.
  • Education Data Management (25%) : Leads CRM and constituent data management for Education vertical including constant scrubbing of data and leading efforts to acquire and/or lease new constituent records from vendors for assigned Education Programs.
  • Media Relations/PR (25%): Develops media relations/PR strategy across traditional and new media for key Education program announcements and events, leveraging existing media relationships and cultivation of new contacts within education and nonprofit industries.  
  • Analytics and Reporting (10%): Manages tracking of programmatic results, statistics analysis, and reporting for marketing efforts. collaborates with internal departments to institute best practices for web and social tracking through tools like Google Analytics. Organizes and prepares metrics reports for team and senior management on key priorities as assigned.
  • Market Research (5%): Continuous surveillance and analysis of NGS’ products and programs and our competitors. Provide market insights on product acceptance, buyer personas, and industry feedback. Collaborate with staff to build and distribute marketing surveys.  
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s degree
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years of experience in marketing and PR required with proven web-expertise in multi-channel integrated marketing campaigns, including timeline and content creation and overall fiduciary responsibility.
  • Audience segmentation management and experience marketing to educators through a CRM platform like Salesforce, as well as proven media relations success is required.

Knowledge and Skills Required

  • The candidate should possess strong communication, media relations/PR, sales, and presentation skills, knowledge of current marketing trends in the education arena, and experience marketing educational products/programs in multimedia platforms.
  • Experience with professional education organizations and publishing is beneficial. A successful candidate will have strong experience in email marketing strategies and implementation including familiarity with platforms such as MailChimp and Marketing Cloud.  
  • The candidate must be data driven, results oriented and able to deliver consistently strong, measurable results; have experience in creating programmatic integrated marketing plans and budget management; have knowledge of marketing automation and CRM utilization; have proven success in PR campaigns; and possess excellent computer skills especially in Excel, Adobe suite, and Google applications.  Above all, the candidate must be a strong team player.
