Manage the design, development and maintenance of online courses and other digital learning experiences to serve the needs of the Science and Exploration division, other National Geographic divisions, and outside funders/partners. Courses vary and may include professional development programs, storytelling modules, instructor led experiences, and content or pedagogy education courses that align with National Geographic strategic initiatives.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Program management:  Manage all aspects of each assigned digital learning product, course, or program from inception to completion, including budgets, program plans, timelines, and creation of a Memoranda of Understanding or proposal agreements. Oversee staff and contractors (writers, researchers, expert reviewers, editors, photo researchers, video producers, technical support staff) and manage all associated budgets and deliverables. (35%)
  • Asset creation: Design, develop/write, review and edit high-quality online courses, modules, e-learning content, instructional materials, and instructor-led training materials on a variety of topics for multiple audiences.  Deliver on-deadline, well-written, well-researched content that is optimized for media format and audience, and adheres to the project style guide. Uploads and manages all course content. (35%)
  • Course Management- Monitor multiple courses at a time and manages the full online experience of Science and Exploration Courses within the Learning Management System (LMS). Creates and manages course schedules and metrics and evaluation within the LMS and develops and implements recruitment strategies. Develops strategies to encourage completion of the certification program and online courses. (20%)
  • Technology Management - Manages Learning Management System (LMS) with digital team to ensure the system is fully functional and meets the needs of instructional designers and course participants. Provides strategic recommendations on use of LMS and other digital tools to provide innovative, effective online and blended learning experiences. (10%)
Educational Background: 
Bachelor’s or Master’s degree in Instructional Design, Educational Technology, or similar field required.  Advanced coursework in education, adult learning, educational technology, or related field preferred. Content knowledge in either Storytelling, Cons
Skills/Experience: 
  • 5+ years of related experience in any of the following: Educational writing and editing experience--preferably in print or web-based publishing or multimedia development; related project or program management experience. 3+ years experience working with at least one Learning Management System (LMS). Knowledge of aspects of Web 2.0, including communities, user-generated content, public data and asset sharing a plus.
  • Highly developed oral and written communication skills and ability to work with individuals and groups at all levels. Ability to work on multiple projects, under deadlines, with changing priorities in a dynamic, fast-paced, environment.
  • Familiarity with content management systems, database design and management, web analytics tools and project management tools. Demonstrated ability to lead and manage instructional design projects.
  • Proficiency in Office Suite and HTML, experience with Adobe Creative Suites and Flash desirable. Visual design skills (Dreamweaver, Photoshop, Illustrator) and ability to storyboard a plus.
  • Excellent knowledge of adult learning theories and instructional design models and/or lesson and curriculum planning skills a plus.
