Manager, Content Development

Reporting to the Director of Content Development, the Manager of Content Development is responsible for ensuring day-to-day execution of editorial product creation for NGS’s major operation programs. The Manager supports the development of each program’s storytelling strategy, creates and manages content-specific workplans and ensures coordination between internal stakeholders. In addition s/he supports NGS/NGP editorial collaboration efforts, working closely with the rest of the Storytelling team.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Create workplans and monitor schedules for editorial deliverables for SciEx operating programs.  (20%)
  • Assist Director and other senior storytelling staff in developing on-going content strategies that amplify programmatic work and priorities.  (25%)
  • Manage day-to-day execution of content development, coordinating across Storytelling, SciEx, Marketing and Engagement, Labs and Digital teams. (45%)
  • Review NGP editorial calendars to find synergies between NGS priorities and planned coverage and ensure appropriate NGS credit language is included in joint NGS/NGP projects. (5%)
  • Support Director in managing budget and external contractors.  (5%)
Skills/Experience: 
  • At least five years of experience in the media and communications industry in an editorial role. Familiarity with National Geographic programs a plus.
  • Strong operational and editorial skills.  Demonstrated ability to develop and produce content across multiple platforms.
  • Experience identifying and managing content creators.
  • Keen understanding of how different media platforms work.
  • Attention to detail, ability to understand and prioritize multiple requests from different team members;
  • Must be a self-guided, creative, highly organized, and motivated individual;
    Comfort with ambiguity and the ability to work through problem-solving on a new team;
  • Understanding of legal and rights terminology;
  • Must be capable of exercising flexibility, multitasking and working effectively with others;
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills; experience using Microsoft Word, Excel and Keynote.
