Legal Counsel for the Elderly’s  (LCE) Pro Bono Project provides legal counsel to older clients in D.C. with limited means by developing, referring and monitoring pro bono cases sent to attorneys in private practice in DC or with the government. Provides technical assistance and guidance to pro bono attorneys drafting life planning documents on behalf of LCE’s clients, including Wills Powers of Attorney for Heath Care and Finance and DC Transfer on Death Deeds. Conducts legal outreach in D.C. and plans law firm legal clinics.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Helps develop, screen, and place pro bono cases with private sector attorneys and law firms.
  • Supports the Pro Bono Manager/Attorney in advising and closely monitoring pro bono attorneys accepting referrals on legal issues, including Social Security cases, life planning documents, administrative proceedings, landlord/tenant law, and consumer matters.  Memorializes case developments and advice in computerized database.
  • Organizes life planning legal clinics at DC law firms.
  • Networks with DC law firm attorneys to encourage them to accept pro bono matters
  • Helps supervise volunteer paralegals and attorneys working at LCE to ensure that the Project closely monitors referred cases and provides accurate information to pro bono attorneys.
  • Writes accurate and compelling digest summaries of pro bono cases available for referral and emails them to LCE’s pro bono panel through a distribution list.
  • Conducts periodic legal outreach at senior centers, DC-subsidized housing and other community venues to obtain new cases through the Active Intake Project, with an emphasis on legal outreach to Asian seniors in the District of Columbia. Handle outreach cases.
  • Helps pro bono manager with Legal Counsel for the Elderly’s bi-annual, Pro Bono Publico newsletter. Writes articles for each issue of newsletter.
  • Assists supervisor with case responsibilities, such as legal research, chain of real property title, and statutes of limitations
  • Completes reports as needed for these projects.
  • Member in good standing of the DC Bar or eligible to waive in
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Juris Doctorate degree and a member of the DC Bar or eligible to waive in
Skills/Experience: 
  • A minimum of 2+ years legal experience preferably in a legal services setting (clinical experience may count toward this requirement).
  • Member of the DC Bar or eligible to waiver in
  • Strong problem-solving and multi-tasking skills required.
  • Attention to detail required
  • Demonstrated commitment to poverty/public interest law with low-income seniors.
  • Knowledge of elder and poverty law
  • Strong organizational and communication skills
  • Amenability to local travel throughout D.C.
  • Chinese (Cantonese or Mandarin) speaking is a plus, but not required.
  • Commitment to the goals and priorities of AARP
