Supports the work of the Legal Hotline and other legal teams within LCE. Completes intake interviews for potential LCE clients contacting the Legal Hotline, walking in to LCE, who have applied for services online, and who have been referred to LCE. Provides non-legal assistance to clients and applicants. Provides limited administrative support to the Legal Hotline.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Answers live calls for legal assistance on LCE’s Legal Hotline, screens callers for eligibility for LCE services, and conducts accurate and complete conflict checks. Refers non-eligible callers to other resources.
  • Collects and inputs required demographic and legal problem information into the LCE case management system, by conducting telephone and in-person intake interviews with prospective clients, for use by attorneys to develop cases.
  • Collects documentation from clients and prospective clients. 
  • Researches court records and other public records to develop complete intake information for attorneys.
  • Routes cases to Legal Hotline or other legal teams within LCE and schedules or reschedules client appointments with staff attorneys.
  • Provides accurate information and referrals to clients and applicants for services.
  • Handles case management database documentation, including case intakes, case opening/closing, and case notes.
  • Creates and implements systems for improving and managing intake workflow.
  • Assists with tracking and assignment of referrals from outside entities to LCE.
  • Assists with administration of intake call center system.
Educational Background: 
Minimum of completion of an associate’s degree, paralegal training, or certificate with relevant training and experience related to the duties of the position.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Demonstrated interest in working in a non-profit setting, preferably with low income elders. 
  • Degree in psychology or social work, or demonstrated relevant experience, preferred. District of Columbia notary public is a plus.
  • Ability to speak Spanish is strongly preferred.
