Integrated Communications Strategy Director

Develops and manages communications strategies that raise awareness and promote engagement around key AARP initiatives.  Focuses on AARP’s advocacy agenda, which includes national and multi-state campaigns, as well as legislative efforts on Capitol Hill and with the Administration.  Collaborates with the AARP Foundation in raising awareness and engagement around its charitable work focused on low-income seniors.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Develops a full array of communications strategies, including the development of messages, identification of audiences, timing, and selection of the most appropriate earned, shared, and owned communications channels.
  • Coordinates with external groups in coalitions to support AARP priorities.
  • Manages an internal matrix team, which is comprised of marketing experts, programmatic staff, and communications channel managers who provide advice and support for the strategy.
  • Develops and oversees the implementation of communications and marketing plans and successfully positions AARP with its key stakeholders, members, and prospective members.
  • Develops proactive communications campaign plans for AARP’s advocacy and foundation-related initiatives.
  • Maintains high credibility with department colleagues and clients enterprise-wide.
  • Serves as a liaison between various departments and groups.
  • Maintains close relationships with the leaders of AARP’s various communications channels and integrates them into the planning processes, as appropriate.
  • Serves as an “issue expert” on AARP’s major advocacy campaigns and Foundation programs, while remaining flexible enough to provide valuable strategic communications counsel and project management for any communications initiative.
  • Delivers seasoned judgment and insightful, intelligent, and creative advice to senior-level leaders of AARP initiatives and departments
  • Develops strategic communications plans that use the most appropriate communications vehicles to target specific audiences that will help a department/initiative achieve success.
  • Tracks communications and marketing performance metrics.
  • Works closely with business units enterprise-wide to ensure client needs and deadlines are met.
  • Manages contracts with vendors and other consultants, as appropriate.
Educational Background: 
Completion of a Bachelor’s degree in Communications, Public Relations, or a related discipline (advanced degree preferred)
Skills/Experience: 
  • Minimum of 10 years of experience in developing communications/public relations strategies for a variety of clients.  Experience with campaigns, either political or issue advocacy, is required.  High degree of conceptualization of issues and creative problem solving ability are required.
  • Demonstrates a strong knowledge of organizational priorities, goals, and projects (especially enterprise and communications priorities).
  • Possess strong client service orientation, project management, and account management skills.
  • Demonstrates an excellent understanding of, and ability to work within organizational politics, networks, and a matrix management system.
  • Demonstrates strong interpersonal skills (e.g., listening, negotiating, facilitating, managing conflict, flexibility, etc.).
