Reporting to the The Geographer, the GIS Cartographer will be responsible for research and execution of maps within the National Geographic Society and for providing geographic data analysis and management in support of science, exploration, and education programs. He or she will produce and oversee maps that are used within indexes, print and web publications, and in support of National Geographic Society programs. He or she will support development of databases for geographic visualization and for cartographic production and provide geographic analyses for a variety of projects. The position sits within NatGeo Labs, which are comprised of three focus areas: Exploration Technology, Geographic Visualization, and Digital Exploration.
- Research and execute print and digital maps as needed for the National Geographic Society. (30%)
- Provide GIS support services (geographic analysis, remote sensing processing, and other tasks) as needed for the National Geographic Society. (30%)
- Identify, contract, and manage freelance and contract cartographers as needed for National Geographic publications and programs. (20%)
- Represent National Geographic externally by developing and cultivating relationships, partnerships and projects with like-minded individuals, educational institutions, foundations and organizations. (10%)
- Maintain and strengthen internal collaboration with the National Geographic Partners, particularly with its cartographic staff. (10%)
- Position requires a minimum of five years of combined experience in 1) producing print and digital maps within an editorial or map production setting and 2) working with industry standard software systems for geographic database management and spatial analysis. Experience in conservation GIS and mapmaking preferred..
Knowledge and Skill Requirements
- Must be knowledgeable in the latest industry standard mapmaking and geographic information system software (must include Adobe Creative Suite and Esri ArcGIS). Candidate should be team oriented, but confident in the value of his or her own ideas, contribution, and role, and be able to exercise independent judgment. Should have strong leadership skills to supervise and motivate others to achieve the highest standards of excellence. Superior organization skills and the ability to handle multiple tasks under the pressure of tight deadlines.
