Context: The Sierra Club’s D.C. federal policy internship provides hands-on experience into the federal policy process, lobbying, organizing and advocacy realms-- all while representing the Sierra Club, the nation's oldest and largest environmental organization. Interns in this paid, temporary position will have an unparalleled opportunity to learn about and engage in energy and environmental policy at the national level.

Scope: Works closely with the Deputy Legislative Director and other Federal Policy staff to plan and carry out advocacy and governmental relations activities, supporting a wide range of national programs and initiatives. Researches legislation, drafts memos, talking points, advocacy materials, compiles data, provides event and meeting support, and tracks and reports on advocacy and lobbying efforts. As needed, writes and designs other materials, attends events and briefings, reports on legislative activities, and drafts and policy or issue summaries.

Areas of Responsibility: 
  • Compiles weekly updates on federal legislation and administrative actions to circulate to field organizers.
  • Performs research and analysis using a variety of resources; drafts memos, talking points, and other advocacy documents and materials.
  • Attends briefings, Congressional hearings and activities, take notes, and distributes to relevant internal capacities.
  • In cooperation with Federal Policy team members, helps support the organization and execution of events.
  • Tracks legislation on various issues.
  • Creates and maintains field organizing tools and materials. Performs special projects, and miscellaneous duties as assigned.
Educational Background: 
Currently pursuing or already graduated from an undergraduate or graduate program, or equivalent combination of education and experience. High-school diploma or GED required.
Skills/Experience: 
  • Excellent writing and communications skills
  • Knowledge of environmental advocacy and/or national politics preferred
  • Ability to apply discretion and understand the importance of organizational confidentiality
  • Ability to work cooperatively and interact effectively with staff, volunteers, the public and others outside the organization
  • Ability to meet quick deadlines and prioritize multiple projects
  • Comfort using online tools, specifically google docs
