The Washington, D.C. Litigation Team is one of four branches of NRDC’s Litigation Team; the other branches are in San Francisco, New York, and Chicago. The Team’s litigation spans a broad range of environmental issues, such as combating climate change, protecting public health, promoting environmental justice, curbing air and water pollution, and preserving wildlife and wild places. In recent years, the Litigation Team has brought cases to safeguard the people of Flint, MI and Newark, NJ from continued exposure to lead in drinking water; remediate toxic pollution in the Penobscot River; abate mold in New York City public housing for residents with asthma; and protect the residents of Dickson, Tennessee, from TCE in groundwater and their homes.
NRDC is seeking a legal intern to work with the Litigation Team in our Washington, D.C. office. The legal intern selected for this position will do legal research and writing to support developing and/or active cases, in collaboration with and under the supervision of NRDC lawyers. Interns are also invited to participate in litigation planning and strategy meetings. Candidates should expect to work with several lawyers, who will work together to coordinate assignments and making sure that the intern gets interesting, challenging, and varied work and timely feedback.
You should have a strong academic record; well-developed writing, research, and interpersonal skills; and a demonstrated interest in and commitment to public service work or environmental and public health issues.
We ask that legal interns that are eligible to receive academic credit seek credit for the internship time. We can help with applications or other materials that are needed to secure the credit (e.g., preparation of workplans and evaluations, meetings with academic advisors). If you aren’t eligible for academic credit for the internship time, we can offer a $15/hour stipend.
The internship is for Fall 2019 in NRDC’s Washington, D.C. office. The internship will begin in August or September and end before exams. Start and end dates and other scheduling details are negotiable, but we look for a minimum time commitment of two days a week over the course of an academic term. Please note there is the potential for a remote work schedule based on the intern's preferences. A small transit reimbursement may also be available.
